Library Item Name:

Autism home meets need

Summary Statement:

After struggling to find suitable facilities for her autistic daughter, Shawna Egan began the Children’s Center for Autism in Cary.

The group home, the first of its kind in McHenry County, opened in 2003. Egan’s story is inspirational for many reasons. She was a parent facing enormous challenges and she not only met those challenges, but also created a service that helps other families, too.

The group home Egan began now serves four children with severe autism, including Egan’s daughter. Autism is a neurological disorder affecting about one in 500 children. The home recently received a Lincolnland Legend award. It was statewide recognition of the one-on-one services the group home successfully offers its clients.
