Help Autism Now

Summary Statement:

The Help Autism Now Society (HANS) was founded in 2002 by a physician and nurse, Paul and Linda, parents of a child severely affected with autism from birth. Despite over 40 years of combined medical experience they discovered that they had not received any training in autism. As a result they decided to develop a program that would greatly facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of autism, so that families would not suffer needlessly as a result of delayed diagnosis. For parents, HANS has developed television-advertising spots and these started airing in September of 2006 throughout the Northwest. Concurrently all the pediatricians, family practitioners and child psychiatrists, almost 2000 physicians, throughout Oregon, will be provided with a package of materials that HANS has created.

These materials include:

* Physician Handbook with over 100 illustrations and objective tools that will enable physicians to more easily diagnose and treat autism.
* Screening posters and a 4-minute instructional video based on the CHAT, Checklist for Autism in Toddlers; a validated screening tool.
* Illustrated Parent information brochures that can be given to the parents to help them understand autism. These materials can be viewed at the HANS website and are available in PDF format for printing.

Since children with autism usually do not like anything new or different, and they often respond better to visual cues, HANS has created the books: “Going to see the Doctor” and “Going to have blood drawn”. These books are designed as simple step-by-step pictures to prepare the child in advance. They can also be viewed and listened to online.
