My name is Mary Laresch. I have a husband, four grown children, and six grandchildren. My youngest child, who is 36, has Asperger syndrome. I have six grandchildren. One granddaughter has Asperger syndrome, one grandaughter has ADD, and one grandson had ADHD. Along with six other parents I have started a 501 (c) 3 non-profit corporation to get services for adults with Asperger syndrome. When my son was younger, he had many problems, and there was little known about Asperger syndrome. He never spoke when he was a child, and never participated in any sports or social activities. Now, he talks non-stop, and participates in men's ice hockey, down-hill skiing, and most other sports, and is very social. He still has problems, and always will, but with support he continues to learn how to navigate our social world. I work with many adults with Asperger syndrome, and we are fundraising to get funds to open up a day center/recreational/training place where these adults can socialize, learn, have some fun together, train for a job, in a trusting, and non-threatening enviornment. I am very excited about this venture, since these adults were misdiagnosed throughout their childhood, and did not receive appropriate services, especially social skills training.
