4muskateers's Bio

Hi,

My name is Diana,  I have one daughter (27) and four boys (22) (14) (13) and (9).  I have 1 grand-daughter in heaven and four grand-sons (7) (4) (1) and (2).  I have been happily married for 14 years and 12 of them have been with the challenges of autism, and year 15 is this May.  I used to hold support meetings for parents here in Madera, I did this for 4 1/2 years...But do to the lack of parental interest in recovering these children, In July of 2007, I stopped the support group...I still provide resources when the local agencies ask for them.  Now we try and do as many family outings as possible. I homeschool Julian, and I am his teacher, doctor, nurse, one on one aide, and  therapist for everything.

As long as God gives be breath, I will continue to keep looking under every stone, and move as many mountains as possible to help Julian recover, and be all GOD intended him to be.   May GOD's glory shine through Julian for the world to see.   amen y amen.

explaining autism/verification

My daughter made these cards for Casper, they are great to use at the parks, restaurants, movies, any where you feel you made need to explain

Great job on the cards!! At the Easter Seal Autism Center in my town, the staff has business-sized cards that explain what autism is and if any further info is needed, to contact the center. I give them to anyone that asks me about Robbie's behavior, and I ask them to please pass the info around. Give your sweet daughter a big hug for me, I'm very proud of her effort!

I think it is helpful. I agree it's not having to justify your child's behavior...it's an education tool. If we don't show people what they are seeing (the whole picture) all they see is what they see...the behavior. Whatever we can do to help people understand and see the beautiful child behind the screen of behavior helps.

One family that I have worked with had concerns about traveling by air right after 9-11-01. Their son with autism often veralized that he was going to kill even though he was not physically agressive. We used the format set up by the Autism Society of Maine to create a 3'x5" sheet explaining autism and this individual's idiosynchratic behaviors and traits. The parents handed them to the flight attendent and anyone who "stared' or reacted in some way. No one wants to have to justify but at times it's reasonable.

Hi Diana, your daughter has done a great job on these cards. Sometimes I feel the need to justify to complete strangers my boys behaviours. Some people would say you shouldn't have to justify to anyone, but I do think it's about autism awareness now and educating everyone. It's a great way!
