4muskateers's Bio

Hi,

My name is Diana,  I have one daughter (27) and four boys (22) (14) (13) and (9).  I have 1 grand-daughter in heaven and four grand-sons (7) (4) (1) and (2).  I have been happily married for 14 years and 12 of them have been with the challenges of autism, and year 15 is this May.  I used to hold support meetings for parents here in Madera, I did this for 4 1/2 years...But do to the lack of parental interest in recovering these children, In July of 2007, I stopped the support group...I still provide resources when the local agencies ask for them.  Now we try and do as many family outings as possible. I homeschool Julian, and I am his teacher, doctor, nurse, one on one aide, and  therapist for everything.

As long as God gives be breath, I will continue to keep looking under every stone, and move as many mountains as possible to help Julian recover, and be all GOD intended him to be.   May GOD's glory shine through Julian for the world to see.   amen y amen.

Who will teach life skills?
by 4muskateers on 02.10.08 - public - 171 visits

Before I took Julian our of school, I had asked to have daily life skills added to his IEP goals. I had goals I wanted him to learn. I was told "we can not add these goals beacuse the could not be taught in the class". For example: I wanted him to learn to brush his teeth. ( they stated they were there to help). They said no, sanitary reasons were given. I at the time worked at Head Start and every morning after breakfast we all took turns brushing our teeth. This way we helped the parents educate the child on the importance of dental hygene. Well they said no, because of the other children. I said this is Julian's IEP goal not everyones elses. During this time Julian was the only autistic child in our county/town. Well you can all guess how that IEP went. True life skills can not be taught at school and it is ovious why. Now I am told that life skills are taught in high school, well poo on that mentality, who ever thaught of teaching a young adult with autism these skills at this late age was hanging out on mars. All our children benefit from early training. As a little ball of clay they can be molded into someone useful. Our children can be molded with love, and patience to be a beautiful assest to a family and not a burden for life. So to answer my own question... Who will teach daily living skills, I will answer with another, WHO IS A CHILD'S 1st. TEACHER.

I'm sorry your team wasn't willing to help with lifeskills, truth is, YES they do have to help with lifeskills. We aren't just experts in autism but also have to be experts in the IEP process. There are ways to document and request this and if it's not recieved well, then a complaint to the DOE or mediation are necessary. My child learned everything from potty training to handling money to appropriate public behavior. It may take some pressing, but it can and should be a part of an IEP.
