Aaronsmom's Bio

After years of telling doctors that something else was wrong, we were told that Aaron has Asperger Syndrome.  I was confused and scared, but I have come to realize that AS didn't change Aaron.  He's still the wonderful, strange, funny, little boy that I wanted everyone else to have a chance to love.  If anything the diagnosis has made it easier for a lot of people (but not all) to look past "odd" behaviors and see how fantastic Aaron is.

If anything I struggle with the idea that Aaron isn't "autistic enough" for me to be able to seek support and comfort in a community like this.  I can't explain the feeling.  I think it's insane, but that is where I am.  Maybe it's part of the process, maybe it's just me.

I used to ________, but now I ________.

I used to get angry when Aaron screamed and cried for no reason at all, but now I know the reasons and sometimes want to cry with him. I used to feel embaresed by my son's behavior, but now I'm ready to fight if someone gives him a look. I used to feel so hopeless when Aaron was sad and talked about dying, but now I can see a bright future for him. I used to wish Aaron would change, but now I'm working on changing myself. I used to long for answers, but now I realize that the answers just cause me to ask more questions. I used to think Aaron was an incredible, amazing, funny and unique person, but now...wait I still think that!

It is nice to see and understand how we need to change in order for our children to understand, so that they can want to change and be more like us...because after all we are the example...and our children look up to us and want to be just like Daddy or Mommy.

Understanding really changes how we think and feel, doesn't it? Good for you for looking ahead, and for staying so tightly on his side! Thank you for posting this.
