Aaronsmom's Bio

After years of telling doctors that something else was wrong, we were told that Aaron has Asperger Syndrome.  I was confused and scared, but I have come to realize that AS didn't change Aaron.  He's still the wonderful, strange, funny, little boy that I wanted everyone else to have a chance to love.  If anything the diagnosis has made it easier for a lot of people (but not all) to look past "odd" behaviors and see how fantastic Aaron is.

If anything I struggle with the idea that Aaron isn't "autistic enough" for me to be able to seek support and comfort in a community like this.  I can't explain the feeling.  I think it's insane, but that is where I am.  Maybe it's part of the process, maybe it's just me.

Today was like every other day, Aaron tried to play with another child and was called crazy. I wish this was a rare occurrence, but it is not. Aaron has become terribly aware of how different he is. Other children can be insulting and hurtful when they become annoyed by Aaron and Aaron is so sensitive that he usually runs away and cries. Today was different in one way. He didn't run and cry. He got angry and stood up for himself. "I'm not crazy. Look, this book proves it!" He hands the other boy All Cats Have Asperger's Syndrome, which he carries in his back pack and as the boy is looking through it with Aaron, his father walks up. All three of them went through the book together. Aaron walked away happy and calm and that boy and his father both learned something today!
I am so proud of Aaron.

What a great moment for your son. Most NT kids wouldn't have the confidence to stand up to a mean kid-you must be so proud! And I love that they even looked through the book together. I hope this is a new friend for your son now. I hope my kids can stand up for themselves as well when they get to this point. Kristin Kristin

That was so smart of Aaron to do.Jared loves to play with others but the so called normal kids are so mean it breaks my heart seeing them say or do things to our children. Great job little Man!!!

That was very brave of you son. My Mickie doesn't even attempt to play with his own sisters, but I hope when he gets better that he can handle himself as well as you son did-Bless his heart.

Way to go Aaron! I hope my little boy will be able to do that for himself if need be, one day too. You should pat yourself on the back -- Aaron obviously has good self esteem to be able to stand up for himself like that!

Well, how cool is that? I also give credit to the little boy who sat and looked at the book with Aaron. What a positive first experience (if it is the first time he's pulled out the book). I hope the father takes more time to teach his son about compassion and friendship. Way to go, Aaron! Can he come to our neighborhood??!!
