Agpuz18's Bio

I am a 40 something mom of a teen with autism, I am happily married for 20 years now. I work as a Teaching Assistant for children with autism at a local school and I love it! I have worked there for almost 7 years! I am involved in a local chapter of thr Autism Society and volunteer for their many fundraisers. I love to work out and run....keeps me level headed! I also enjoy my family, friends and co-workers and love to bowl, dance and go out to eat! I am a very strong advocate for my son and have no problem speaking my mind. I am also very open minded as well.

As my son turned 18 about a month ago, I was reflecting on when he was diagnosed with autism when he was 3. He has made great gains throughout his life and I am very proud of him. 18 is a very "important" stage in many teens lives. They are officially an "adult", they can vote, buy lottery tickets, go to college etc. Many of my friends and relatives have children who grew up with my son and are going to experience these stages. This is bittersweet for me. I want what is best for my son but I can't help
feeling a little sad when I hear about all the experiences my friends and family memebers will be having with their teens. My son will get there it just will take him a little longer. I just wish the world would take s step back and not judge a person by how successful they are but how they have made a difference in the lives of other people. My son is my life. He has brought me to where I am now. He has "brought me "to work with other children on the spectrum and making a difference in their lives. Thanks Joe! If I had to live my life over, I wouldn't change a thing. I am truly blessed to have my son. Dad and I love you very much!

Happy Birthday my son is 27. He has very few friends. Most are NT adults. My son had a hard time with finishing high school. It took him 6 years and 13 tries. but he finally got his diploma. He is now taking seminary courses and making A+ 's. Hold on God is in control Things will improve. We are still waiting on that right Christian girlfriend for our son. Best wishes for your son and his improvement. We will be praying for him. In Jesus' hands Beausmommy

I can understand your bittersweet emotions about his new milestone....I find that I am always having to process the comparisons I find myself making on a regular basis....and then working them over in my brain as I try to find the beauty, the lesson, the character in each deficit. Joe is lucky to have your love, support and hope.

Well Happy Birthday. You know every Birthday is a huge step for your children. Every Birthday I recall all the changes that have been made, little gains mean alot. Every year I see my baby grow into a young man and wonder what the world will be like for him when he is 18. Your family should be proud. I am happy for you both.
