Autismaware's Bio

Hello--My name is Britt, and I am a married mum to four wonderful kiddos, and stepmum to another.  We are going through a lot right now, with the tragic death of my oldest son, Nicholas, on March 15th, 2007.  (Please go to:  http://nicholas-mark-higgins.memory-of.com )  Nick's son, my first grandchild, was born on July 18th, 2007, and is the spitting image of my son a toddler.

Nicholas (Nick) & Jacob (Jake) are my children from my first marriage.

My son, Jake, is a Junior at the University of Maine at Farmington, majoring in Geo-Chemistry.  My stepson is Alan, and he is severely disabled, and resides in an excellent facility about 60 miles from us.  We visit him often.

My husband's name is Roger, and we have two GORGEOUS little girls named Emma & Kaysa.  Emma is seven years old, and attends public school and is in the first grade.   Em has ASD with Mixed Developmental Delays, and has made REMARKABLE progress with early intervention & therapies.  The 'angels' that helped Emma so much are the staff of Woodfords Preschool in Waterville and her Developmental Pediatrician, Victoria Dalzell, MD, of Maine Pediatric Specialty Group in Falmouth.

Kaysa is five years old, and is diagnosed with PDD-NOS, ADHD, and Regulation of Sensory Processing Disorder.  (YES, she is as sweet as can be, AND a handful!!!)   She is currently receiving ABA & Speech therapies.

Kaysa had an adenoidectomy on 3/31/08 for chronic congestion and mouth-breathing.  (X-ray confirmed very prominent & enlarged adenoids.)  Perhaps she will no longer need to take Singulair anymore--only time will tell.   (I heard at an Autism Medical Conference that Singulair seems to help some children with ASD's.  Perhaps the anti-inflammatory properties help?)

Both girls take gummy multivitamins and either Coromega or gummy Omega 'fish' daily, as well as Probiotics, Vit D drops, Sublingual B liquid vits, & prescription medications.  They also take TMG.

It is NOT easy for me to take the time to grieve the horrific loss of my child AND be everything I can be to my other children right now---but I am definitely doing the very best I can,  PLUS---my remaining children are probably my lifesavers.  They keep me busy and focused, too!  My husband has been very supportive and available at all times.

Take care---PEACE!

Emma donated over a foot of her long tresses this weekend to Locks Of Love! She is very proud of herself.
Her daddy is very happy that her hair is shorter, too!
