Crofty's Bio

Hi everyone I am Tracy a married 36 yr old mum of two boys with Asd. My 6 year old Zak has aspergers and my 4 year old Kai, has more complex autism with alot of additional sensory needs. It can be quite challenging having two boys at opposite ends of the spectrum but our family are very supportive and especially my husband Lee, who is my rock in times of need.

Pica!!!!!!!!!!
by Crofty on 06.01.08 - public - 112 visits

My 4 yr old still mouths alot of things I bought him a chewy tube which is great in the house but now the weather is getting a little warmer, it's a different matter outside. He particularly likes bits of bark, leaves and mud!!! The first 45mins in the garden today was extremely stressful he was just running about getting bits of everything with me saying no constantly. So much for a nice enjoyable afternoon outside. Things got a little better when I blew up and inflatable bouncy council and fiilled his water table up, which did distract him a little. I just wondered if anybodys children are similar and have you managed to overcome it in anyway.

My son has PICA also.. it's hard to control. He usually just eats leaves and paper.. but I have seen him eat other things when stressed out..

Daniel used to do that. As to the leaves, I used to carry around a book on edible plants, and if the plants were edible, not poisonous, I'd let him eat them. I just kept a close eye on him, taking things out of his mouth, and eventually he stopped.

Wynn used to eat dirt and suck on his shirt....Zinc helped and so did a multi-mineral supplement. I, too, have heard that lead poisoning can lead to pica.

When my son was 2, we were able to stop him from mouthing and eating non-food items (crayon tips, pencil lead, sand, kitty litter) by giving him 25 mgs zinc picolinate per day. A zinc deficiency can deaden taste buds, so maybe we awakened sense of taste?. It worked pretty quickly. He is also a lead kid, but we didn't start chelating until almost 3 years later. Simple experiment to try. No doctor necessary. If you wish, start with 5 mgs and work up to 25 mgs. I didn't do that; but my son has never been a sensitive kid to supplements.

Will puts everything in his mouth. Mostly paper, dirt, leaves, yes bark, etc. Makes me crazy!

To Johanna, Julian will get the store plastic bags and make long thin string...I still haven't figured out what's with the string...Oh! he will also spot a loose thread on anyone and go to pull it...he know only does this to our clothes and leaves strangers clothes alone...To Jake Julian in on OptiZinc...this has reduced his nail bitting to almost none...As for Iron we just let him eat as many fruits high in Iron and he is on his 3rd bottle of the Mona Vie (19) berry juices and omegas and glucosamine in the Mona Vie...Julian drinks 1/2 a cup every night at dinner.

Zinc is known to help with chewing and pica.

Daniel has Pica and it is a chore to manage. We had blood tests done and he was very low in iron so we put him on iron drops. Now that is not working so well. He chooses to eat any kind of paper or he will pull on anything that will give him a long string. It requires him to be watched constantly for fear of him trying to eat other things. Would love to hear if you find something that works. Good Luck!

From what the DAN Dr's have found out...when a child has high levels of heavey metal toxins, they also are very low in the natural minerals the body needs...so the eating of the natural eliments makes sence...have you checked him out for mineral difficiency?

Yikes you brought back memories...every Christmas I had to be extra vigilant around the Christmas tree as Jimmi used to grab those mini light bulbs and crunch them...sounds like you are doing everything possible...distraction, offering other things, rewarding for not putting inappropriate things in your mouth...it helped me get through! Good luck!

Isn't it funny how a child who won't eat regular food due to sensory issues will eat bark. Mine has severe feeding issues but will eat playdough, yuk. Good luck! My nephew had severe PICA and liked eating metal objects. He had intestinal issues because of it. I believe him to be undiagnosed Asperger's.
