Hi everyone I am Tracy a married 36 yr old mum of two boys with Asd. My 6 year old Zak has aspergers and my 4 year old Kai, has more complex autism with alot of additional sensory needs. It can be quite challenging having two boys at opposite ends of the spectrum but our family are very supportive and especially my husband Lee, who is my rock in times of need.

That's my youngest Kai.
Yesterday we went to visit a possible childminder for him to go 2 days a week during the big summer holidays. The idea is that for once I can focus on my other more able autistic son who often has to take a back seat because of his brother Kai's additional needs.
When we arrived at the childminders Kai proceeded to run backwards and forwards picking up things and throwing them. Her face was a picture!!!
I explained that at home he was quite active and we had removed as much clutter as possible for safety reasons and gave him soft play things which couldn't break anything. Although this lady had experience of working with an other autistic child at a much higher level than Kai, and also of working with twins with down syndrome we decided that she wasn't suitable. She would also have an 18 month old baby to watch as well while Kai was there and I was worried for it's safety.
As we left, my social worker told me not to be disheartened we would find somebody suitable for him but it could take a while as he needs a lot of supervision. 
I couldn't help it I did feel disheartened, I just hope there is one good person out there for us who will accept him for what he is and want to and be enthusiastic at the idea of looking after him.

Hi everyone, I'm kind of excited and nervous at the same time at the moment as my husband and I go on holiday in the morning. We're really looking forward to the break but can't help feeling a little strange about leaving the kids at grandma and grandads as they have always been with us 24/7 for 6 years!!! 
I took on board everyone's advice from the last composition I wrote on this topic. For our 6 year old I have done a social story about mummy and daddy going to the airport and then on a plane to the hotel and back home again. I have also done him a chart with a picture of him and his brother at grandmas house with 7 numbers on to post in an envelope each night and then a picture of us all back at home. I think this visual support has made it alot easier to explain to him, which is great! I'm not quite sure how my youngest will react, his understanding isn't very good yet but hopefully as he is used to grandma he will be ok. The main worry with him was the sleeping but now we have got melatonin it is alot better.
So just to say, thanks for your support so far, will look forward to catching up when I return!

Hi everyone, I'm sorry to say that I'm having a low day to day, caused by several things I think.
Firstly we got some melatonin inported from the states and gave it to Kai for the first time on Friday night, it worked really well and he fell asleep pretty quickly and slept all night. My husband and I were over the moon!!
Saturday night was a disaster though, Kai fell asleep but unfortunately his brother Zak accidently woke him up. This left Kai extremely upset and for three and a half hours I was on my own and anxiously trying to calm him. He was frantically rubbing his legs and feet in a stressed kind of way and was just getting more worked up if I tried to intervene.  I felt total despair at the time and I hate to say it but I lost my patience and smacked him, which I feel absolutely terrible about now. I'm annoyed with myself for not staying strong and calm.
There are no excuses but I think the reason I didn't cope was a build up of everything we are going through at the moment. My husband and I are so busy, tired and stressed and have had a taster of one good night's sleep but are scared that's it for our good fortune!
My husband is extremely busy at work and this is taking it's toll on everyone. We argue most of the time. He is working long hrs to try and get in front as we have a wks spa break booked for our anniversary (just the two of us) on the 13th May. Ironically we are not looking forward to our first ever overnight break from the kids as we are not getting on!!!!
Grandma is looking after the boys and has constantly had to reassure us they will cope - I do believe they will, probably alot better than we do!!
I feel a total failure at the moment, sorry I just needed to get this off my chest, I can't talk to anyone else about it right now, especially my husband he just gets mad!!!

As you may or may not be aware I have two sons with autism both at the opposite ends of the spectrum. The issue we are having at the moment is with our 4 year old and I think it's another sensory one!
I noticed it about a month ago and it seems to be gradually getting worse.  His mood changes he gets extremely distressed and rubs his legs and arms. It is almost as if he is uncomfortable in his own skin.
He is a non verbal child who usually requests touch by guiding our hands to him, now when his mood changes we cant do anything at all. 
We can't even work out a pattern to this behaviour. They haven't mentioned he does it at school, we haven't changed our washing powder, he isn't eating anything different apart from a few too many raisons and he's drinking the same. 
It's so distressing for him and us!!! We just want to comfort him. 
We were discharged from our usual specialist a while ago when he started with some more agressive challenging behaviours and referred to CAHMS - (Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services) these behaviours have now stopped and our therapist is on leave! Our occupational therapy sessions have stopped now he has started full time school and our old OT is on leave!
I don't know who to turn to apart from my friends at foggy rock.

Our youngest Kai starts full time at our local special school Pathways tomorrow. 
I feel sick right now with worry and I am extemely nervous about how he will do.
Unfortunately, we had to fight for a place for him, as all the professionals disagreed with our choice and wanted him to go to a school with much more complex learning difficulties.
We stood our ground, went with our gut instinct and asked they let us try him at our preferred choice first. 
After all nearly all the children at Pathways are autistic any way. Alot are non-verbal and have sensory issues like Kai, so the school is geared up specifically for that.
The other school had mainly children with feeding difficulties, physical disabilities and more complex needs.
We just couldn't understand why they thought he would fit in there. Amongst other things, we thought the equipment would be a big visual distraction to him and he could possibly hurt the other children trying to climb on them etc.
I just hope that he can prove everyone wrong, after all he has coped really well with his support in nursery for nearly two years!
He is on a trial period I just hope they give him enough time to settle and that he behaves himself!! Don't think I'm going to sleep tonight.
