Hello,
I am a stay at home mom to 4 wonderful children. i would not trade the time i get to spend with them for anything. The kids are growing up so fast it is unreal. My oldest is in second grade this year, my little me...lol..(she looks just like me) is in kindergarten, and then my baby girl was 4 in November, and my baby boy was 3 in December...He is the reason for joining this site.He is in the process of being evaluated for Autism. So far all they will tell me is that he has developmental delays, Gross motor delays, mixed receptive/expressive language disorder, sensory issues, low muscle tone...and then they say.."Early signs of Aspergers" or "Possible PDD-NOS" , we take him back again this month..i am hoping to hear something other than bring him back in 3 months..:) and his regular ped, said he thinks hi is on the higher end of the spectrum. and his speech therapist said she thinks he might have apraxia...so there you have it.....my introduction....:)...i am hoping to make some friends who understand without a word....:)

Can sensory things change...???....Silas used to eat pureed soup, for lunch and dinner and NEVER complained...and now he gags on it...ever since he was sick a few weeks ago...he will take one bit and gag and say i youk i youk...and wont eat it....his food preferences are fastly diminishing.....:(....he is seeming to be ONLY wanting dry and crunchy all of a sudden when he was sick his throat was VERY sore..do you think he is afraid to swallow because it hurt so bad????.....
also i have noticed over the past few days he has started something new, he is CONSTANTLY chewing on the inside of his lips/cheeks and tounge..does anyone know why he might be starting this....or does any of your kids do it?...
see pictures..:)

I do have sensory and have periods of my life that come and go that I will do that. I have no idea why though. Maybe it is something internal because I really don't know. I just felt compelled to do it.

Sounds like it's related to his digestion. He could have food allergies and yeast issues. Did he take any antibiotics while he was sick? Why don't you post the question at http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/thoughtfulhousecenterforchildren/?yguid=326496087 They seem to know a lot about digestion issues and problems.

I was just talking to my Mom about this. My son use to love mac n' cheese now he gags on it. Last nite he got all excited that it was on his plate and one bite he gagged, then didn't want to touch it. It is perplexing cuz it seemed he really wanted to eat it. Let me know if you figure it out.

Sensory issues and tastes do change. I have seen lots of kids give up foods they used to eat - and take up foods they used to hate. You may want to make a list of what foods he is still eating and talk to his pediatrician about whether he is needing dietary supplements. As for chewing on himself- this definately sounds sensory. It may pass, but you could also try giving him some other things to chew on. Chewy tubes - wet washclothes - etc. Deb

Hmm. That does sound like a sensory issue. There are a lot of nerve endings in the lips and cheeks... Does he bleed or otherwise injure himself when he does it? If not, I'd leave that behavior alone and give him ways of giving himself pressure when he wants it-- he could roll up in a blanket like a burrito, or he could lie down and you could put a pillow on his back and you could gently press down... Things like that.
