I am a parent of an adult with autism spectrum disorder, and mild mentally challenged. It has been a rough road, and long journey, but we remained strong, and did a great job at improving in many aspects with the disability, including behaviors, reformed and limited the pharmaceutical medications, and huge side negative affects. Currently we are doing bio-meds, and detoxification of mercury, gluten free, casseine free diet, dietary supplements, and natural vitamins. I am involved with generation rescue, as a rescue angel, a volunteer representative for unlocking autism. I have been researching and have tons of information, and resources to help those in need. I will share any positive and negative results of treatment, and options! My daughter and angel of light has given me strength and power to over come anything along the path. My heart goes out to helping millions of other families, so if it is only helping one a day, that is doing tons of good. Allowing people to vent, giving support, providing useful information, which is a blessing and that is my goal along the journey, providing my time each and everyday to be there for any and all in need !
God Bless To All

I'm also having a problem clicking on the link... very interested to see it though. I was really shocked to see something written about Melatonin, since James is supposed to be taking it now that he's on the DAN! prot. James was having trouble sleeping, prior to starting all of his therapies. We tried to put him on 1 mg. of Melatonin, but he would wake up every night for 2-3 hrs. So the dr. told us to give him the 2.5 mg sustained release formula, but in order to take it properly, you need to swallow the pill whole. Yeah, that just did not happen. He would keep it in his mouth and try to swallow it by looking up, but he would eventually chomp down on it and pass out half hour later. Then, he would again wake up in the middle of the night for a few hours. So, after a couple months and a boat load of different supplements that he's still on... he doesn't take any Melatonin, but IS finally sleeping through the night. I took a Melatonin to see what the effects were and I too woke up in the middle of the night. Did you have trouble with it in the beginning?

Garrett has been taking Melatonin for about 2 years now. It works very well for him most nights. We have one night a week that sometimes he wakes up at like 3-5 and the night varies. However that is a great improvement from staying up until 7-8 am every night until he would absolutely fall over in exhaustion. Now he will go to bed at 10-11 and sleep most nights until 7-10 depending on the day being a school day or weekend. What a God send! Since our bodies naturally make melatonin (which people with autism bodies rarely do) it is very tolerable for them! I don't know what I would do without it. Garrett has been taking it since before he started kindergarten and he is in 2nd grade now. Hope this helps someone in some way! Stephanie

Hi- Thanks for the info--but your link didn't work for me. Can you check it and maybe edit this with a new link? Thanks - Shannon PS- You might want to add this to the Library under the categories of Sleep, and also Research
