I am a parent of an adult with autism spectrum disorder, and mild mentally challenged. It has been a rough road, and long journey, but we remained strong, and did a great job at improving in many aspects with the disability, including behaviors, reformed and limited the pharmaceutical medications, and huge side negative affects. Currently we are doing bio-meds, and detoxification of mercury, gluten free, casseine free diet, dietary supplements, and natural vitamins. I am involved with generation rescue, as a rescue angel, a volunteer representative for unlocking autism. I have been researching and have tons of information, and resources to help those in need. I will share any positive and negative results of treatment, and options! My daughter and angel of light has given me strength and power to over come anything along the path. My heart goes out to helping millions of other families, so if it is only helping one a day, that is doing tons of good. Allowing people to vent, giving support, providing useful information, which is a blessing and that is my goal along the journey, providing my time each and everyday to be there for any and all in need !

Albert Einstein once said, "only two things are infinite: the
universe and human stupidity". We got a good dose of what many would
call "human stupidity" last week in New Jersey when 5 un-elected
members of the Public Health Council (PHC) voted to mandate four new
vaccines for children. The vaccines that will be mandated in 2008
include: the influenza vaccine, pneumococcal, meningococcal, tetanus,
diphtheria and acellular pertusis (Tdap) vaccine. Two of the vaccines,
influenza and Sanofi Pasteur's meningococcal vaccine (Menomune)
contain thimerosal (mercury).

In spite of a week's long protest from constituents that included
parents, physicians and dozens of organizations, the State Health
Commissioner gave his "seal of approval" on Friday, December 15.

Today I want to appeal to New Jersey Governor Corzine to re-evaluate
these recommendations and carefully consider the ramifications for New
Jersey's children.

Unless Governor Corzine, the state legislature, or perhaps a judge
intervenes, New Jersey will go down in history as the first state in
the nation, for that matter the world, to order parents to vaccinate
their preschoolers with a known developmental neurotoxin, which many
parents, physicians and scientific research suggest is linked to the
epidemic of developmental disorders, including autism.

The PHC recommendation came just days before another "first in the
nation" law was passed by Minnesota lawmakers who voted to ban the
use of mercury in mascara and other cosmetics. "Mercury does cause
neurological damage to people even in tiny quantities...can retard
brain development in children and fetuses who are most vulnerable to
the metal's toxic effects" stated the Minnesota officials.

That's right, you can't put mercury on your mommy's lashes in
Minnesota but New Jersey health officials just can't wait to inject
it into your young children.

After repeated warnings about mercury toxicity in fish and following
its removal from over the counter products, thermostats, industrial
switches, medical devices, animal vaccines, even a leg paint used on
horses, the five appointed members of the PHC and the NJ Department
of Health (DOH) can claim credit for what could be one of the worst
and ill-advised public health decisions forced upon the public in
recent memory; a decision that was made under a cloak of secrecy,
without sufficient debate and perhaps in violation of procedural
protocols.

New Jersey parents have a right to question the DOH actions. After
all New Jersey holds the dubious honor of having the highest autism
rates in the country. According to the

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in 94 New
Jersey children have autism, 1 in 60 boys.

While some NJ public health officials arrogantly dismiss the link
between vaccines and autism as "scientifically unfounded," and tell
reporters concerns about thimerosal is "a moot issue," since most
vaccines are either free of the compound or contain only trace
amounts, like the preschool flu vaccine.", a growing body of
published scientific research shows this

opinion cannot be factually supported.

To the contrary, approximately 90% of the influenza vaccine supply
still contains thimerosal. According to the FDA, the 25 micrograms of
mercury in one influenza vaccine is NOT a "trace amount". According to
EPA guidelines, this amount can only be considered safe if a person
weighs 550 pounds. You would think a health official would know this.

In addition, there is no convincing evidence that the flu shot is
actually effective. A study published in the British Medical Journal,
done by the Cochran Collaboration, considered the Gold Standard for
scientific research, stated

recommendations of flu shots for infants and toddlers are not backed
by scientific evidence [Jan.25, 2006]. So if research tells us the
vaccine is ineffective and it contains toxic mercury, why are
officials recommending it be given to our young children?

Sanofi's Menactra meningococcal vaccine is thimerosal-free and
currently recommended for children between 11-12 years old. However,
the FDA and the CDC are investigating cases of Guillain-Barré
syndrome (GBS) among adolescents who received this vaccine. A larger
study led by Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare is expected to take
approximately 2 years. According to

the CDC, "The study period is necessary to accumulate cases and attain
sufficient statistical power."

The recommended acceptable alternative is Sanofi's Menomune, which
contains 25 micrograms of thimerosal, thus adding to the overall body
burden of one of the most toxic metals on earth.

While some officials want to continue dismissing the vaccine autism
association, the neurological risks associated with the use of the
mercury-based preservative have been well documented in the
scientific literature for decades.

This is noted in a 2004 California Environmental Protection Agency
Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment that found: "the
scientific evidence that  cause reproductive toxicity is
clear and voluminous...The evidence for its reproductive toxicity
includes severe mental retardation or malformations in human
offspring who were poisoned when their mothers were exposed to ethyl
mercury or thimerosal while pregnant ...

The National Toxicology Program (NTP) states that thimerosal is
"poison by ingestion, subcutaneous, intravenous and possibly other
routes," and warns that childhood exposure could result in "mental
retardation in children, loss of coordination in speech, writing,
gait, stupor, and irritability and bad temper progressing to mania."

A 1984 study published in the Journal of Pediatrics found,
"Thimerosal used to irrigate the external auditory canals in a child
with tympanostomy tubes has caused severe mercury poisoning."
[Rohyans J, Walson PD, Wood GA, MacDonald WA Mercury toxicity
following Merthiolate ear irrigations. J Pediatr 1984; 104:311-313].

In 2001 the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) published a review
on the state of science related to mercury toxicity entitled,
Technical Report: Mercury in the Environment: Implications for
Pediatricians. The Report concluded, "Mercury in all of its forms is
toxic to the fetus and children"..."Inorganic and elemental mercury
should not be present in the home or other environments of children"
"It would seem prudent for the FDA to carefully examine all uses of
mercury in pharmaceuticals, particularly pharmaceuticals that are
used by infants and pregnant women." [J Pediatr 2001; 108: 197-205].

As recently as last month a study published in the Journal of Child
Neurology determined, "a significant relation does exist between the
blood levels of mercury and diagnosis of an autism spectrum
disorder".

New Jersey's health officials may believe giving preschoolers and
other children mercury containing influenza shots is good public
health policy but not all physicians would agree. Many physicians,
including United States Congressman Dave Weldon (R-FL), a strong
supporter of our nation's immunization program, has gone on record

stating, "Any doctor who would knowingly inject a baby with a
mercury-containing vaccine. I would consider that malpractice".

If these are not reason enough to question the new mandates, just
last month one of the first autism cases presented in the U.S. Court
of Federal Claims (vaccine court), the government CONCEDED that
vaccines aggravated a pre-existing mitochondrial dysfunction causing
autistic like symptoms in one of the first cases where the case filed
was a claim was that thimeosal caused autism.

So please don't tell me the link between vaccines and autism is
"scientifically unfounded," or there is "no evidence" that vaccines
cause autism in some children. The federal government has already
conceded this point in one case.

Mercury is not the only problem with the new mandates.

The Prevar pneumococcol vaccine also has its own problems. There
have been 3,243 adverse reactions reported to the government's
vaccine surveillance system since Prevnar was first licensed in 2000.
These reports included 476 serious reactions and 79 deaths. Just a few
months ago the Prevnar vaccine was linked to a new antibiotic
resistant "superbug" bacterial infection, causing serious ear
infections in children as young as 6 months. One child suffered
permanent hearing loss.

Should health officials be forcing parents to give their children
vaccines that contain a heavy metal toxin whose packaging contains
the universal symbol for poison and warns the product could cause
mental retardation or one that has thousands of reported adverse
reactions? Where do we draw the line on who knows what is best for
our own children?

In response to

the Public Health Council's recommendations, Governor Corzine was
quoted that he does not "in any way think we should take risks on
vaccines . . . the elements of evaluation should be left to
scientists and data".

I couldn't agree more with Governor Corzine on this point.
Ultimately it is the Governor who is responsible and I am hopeful
that he is taking this matter very seriously.

No governor wants to reject the recommendations of their public
health officials, However, Governor Corzine would not be the first
one to do so in this situation.

When faced with the recommendation by California health officials to
veto a bill aimed at banning thimerosal from children's vaccines back
in 2004, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger rejected this advice and
signed the Mercury Free Act, which strictly limits the amount of
mercury in vaccines or products used by pregnant women and very young
children in the state of California. In a signing message,
Schwarzenegger stated, "I believe that an abundance of caution merits
the acceleration of the process already underway to remove thimerosal
from the last few vaccines that contain it".

Six other governors have signed into law similar bills overruling
the objections of public health officials.

Look, everyone knows what these new recommendations are all about.
MONEY, MONEY AND MORE MONEY!

Vaccines have become the lifeblood of the pharmaceutical industry.

In the 2004 annual report for Chiron Corporation, sales of their flu
vaccine went from $90 million in 2002 to $332.4 million in 2003. Total
vaccine sales went from $357.4 million (2002) to $678.3 million
(2003). Nice increase.

I note this particular year's report because it was in 2003 that
industry, along with health officials, aggressively forged ahead with
a masterful marketing plan. Create fear

that terrible diseases are going spread through schools like wildfires
if every kid isn't vaccinated through a very well financed lobbying
and advertising campaign. Then get a handful of health officials; to
"rubber stamp" exactly what the industry wants. What corporation
wouldn't covet a program sanctioned by the government that forces the

The profits from mandated vaccines has resulted in billions of
profits for the drug companies and if enacted, the new vaccine
recommendations will deliver billions more.

An easy and guaranteed flow of revenue for industry and physicians
alike.

It wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that certain members of the
Public Health Council were the recipients of pharmaceutical industry
generosity. (Riki Jacobs - received Pfizer money for her AIDS
foundation).

For the record, I have repeatedly acknowledged the importance of
vaccinations. There is no question that vaccines have saved many
lives but they are not without risks. Over the last decade, however,
serious and legitimate questions have arisen regarding the number of
vaccines we are giving our children today and whether the ingredients
in those vaccines are as safe as we, the public, have been led to
believe. Until these safety concerns are addressed in a transparent
manner, parents, not bureaucrats, should decide what is best for
their children.

In January of this year, in response to mercury contamination at a
children's day care center, Governor Corzine signed a bill that would
enforce strict guidelines to ensure environmental safety at child care
centers and schools. In a statement Governor Corzine said. "This puts
New Jersey at the forefront of states nationally in protecting
children from environmental contaminants while at child care
facilities and schools."

It would be the height of hypocrisy for New Jersey to now tell
parents they must inject their children with mercury-containing
vaccines.

It is time for New Jersey to lead the nation again and reject the
new vaccine mandates and send a message that our children are no
longer going to be the depositories for toxic contaminants in order
to increase profits for the pharmaceutical industry.

Any parent who wants to vaccinate their child with any of the four
new recommended vaccines can do so today without government coercion.
The state has not needed to mandate these vaccines in the past and
there is no public health emergency to warrant the implementation of
the recommendations now. There is however a public health crisis in
New Jersey caused by the rapid rise of developmental disorders, like
autism.

There can be no harm in slowing down this process and carefully
reviewing the mandated recommendations along with the current state
of science, and the possible ramifications of this very aggressive
vaccination policy.

The new vaccine mandates are not defensible in light of all we know
about thimerosal and mercury toxicity. Governor Corzine has the legal
authority and the responsibility to protect New Jersey's children from
additional and unnecessary mercury exposure.

I urge Governor Corzine to put on hold these new vaccine mandates
and convene a meeting that will include ALL stakeholders and hear
from scientists and his constituents before approving these new
vaccine mandates.

The ball is in your court Governor.

NORTHVALE, N.J. - Teachers at a Bergen County school that serves
autistic children are giving birth to an unusually high number of
autistic children, a researcher said.

Dr. Lawrence Rosen, medical adviser at the Deirdre Imus Environmental
Center for Pediatric Oncology, said there appears to be an autism
cluster at St. Anthony's school in Northvale, which serves children
with autism and other learning disabilities.

He said he suspects it's because of an environmental problem and that
the center, which started the inquiry, wants tests of air, water and
soil at the school, The Record of Bergen County reported for
Wednesday's newspapers.

However, preliminary findings from air quality tests done for the
Northern Valley regional school district have not found anything
unusual at the school, according to an assistant superintendent. No
abnormalities were found during inspections by the state health
department and by an engineering firm hired by the Archdiocese of
Newark, which owns the property.

The initial study included interviews with 24 current or former
school employees who had children either while they worked at the
school or since then. Their 42 offspring included 24 with
developmental disorders _ 10 with autism.

Superintendent Jan Furman pointed out that Rosen's conclusions were
based on a small sampling of employees. Only 46 of the 515 employees
at St. Antony's and other district facilities responded to a letter
sent to them before the interviews were conducted.

Furman noted that Dr. Walter Zahorodny, an assistant professor of
pediatrics at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey,
has said the study's limited scope means it may be premature to
declare an autism cluster at St. Anthony's.

Zahorodny heads the New Jersey Autism Study, part of a multistate
study that found one in every 150 eight-year-olds in the country has
some degree of autism. In New Jersey, the figure is one of every 94
children.

in the middle of a busy road, on his way to the beach. A young girl
with autism outsmarts a number of locks, leaves the house before her
mother wakes up and is found, naked but alive, in a neighbor’s
pool.

At a recent training for police officers here, both cases illustrated
the often delicate task of dealing with people who suffer from autism,
a devastating neurological disorder that often strikes in childhood
and that impairs one’s ability to communicate and to relate to
others.

In the training, the officers were taught that turning off flashing
lights and sirens on a police car could make the difference between a
peaceful or chaotic encounter, and that if they asked someone with
autism if they wanted to waive their rights, they might find that the
person waved back at them.

People with developmental disabilities, including autism, have up to
seven times more contact with law enforcement officers than others,
according to an article in the F.B.I. Law Enforcement Bulletin in
April 2001.

A co-author of the article, Dennis Debbaudt, who is also the author
of “Autism, Advocates and Law Enforcement Professionals,”
led the training. He noted that a 2007 study by the federal Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention showed that 1 in 150 children in
New Jersey have received a diagnosis of autism, a rate 15 times
higher than previous estimates and among the highest in the country.

But when Mr. Debbaudt asked whether any of the police officers, from
departments throughout New Jersey, had received training on autism,
either at police academies or on the job, only a few raised their
hands.

The training, sponsored by Parents of Autistic Children, a nonprofit
service group based in Hazlet, featured videos, lectures and the
personal accounts of parents whose children have a form of autism.
Among them were Mr. Debbaudt and Gary Weitzen, director of the
parents’ group, whose son was the one found in the middle of
the road, headed for the beach.

Mr. Debbaudt told the officers that they should understand autism
“for the safety of others, and so you can go home safe to your
families, so you can make the best use of your time and resources,
enhance your communication skills and avoid litigation.”

He cited the case of Calvin Champion Jr., a 32-year-old man with
autism who died in 2000 after Nashville police officers used pepper
spray on him and subdued him. His family filed a federal lawsuit
against the police and the social service agency caring for him, and
was awarded $4.4 million.

Mr. Debbaudt said he had heard of 6 to 12 cases each year in which
people with autism are harmed, hit with a stun gun or killed by law
enforcement officials.

The officers were told to take plenty of time and be calm when
interviewing autistic people. Some are crime victims, some are
suspects, but the majority who come to the attention of the police
have wandered away from their caregivers, often without an
understanding of the dangers of traffic or open water, which often
attracts them. In fact, drowning is a leading cause of death for
people with autism, Mr. Debbaudt said.

People with autism may be very afraid of or very drawn to police
dogs, Mr. Debbaudt said. They may be attracted to an officer’s
badge and try to grab it, and they may panic if their routines are
broken, if their favorite objects are taken from them, or if
surrounding sights, sounds and smells overwhelm them.

Similar training sessions have been offered around the country.
Autism Speaks, a nonprofit advocacy and fund-raising group, worked
with the Chicago Police Department last spring, and it is working on
a safety tool kit for all first responders, said Lisa Goring,
director of family services for the group.

“We’ve heard from families as well as from professionals
that they just need more instruction, certainly in terms of first
responders understanding that a person with autism may not respond
appropriately or may not respond at all when given a command,”
she said.

A bill cosponsored by State Senator Loretta Weinberg would require
autism awareness programs statewide for emergency medical
technicians, police officers and firefighters. The bill was passed by
the Assembly in March, and awaits action in the State Senate.

I watched them bundled up against the cold winter air on Saturday, November 17, 2007, with their children and the letter from the State of Maryland threatening them with imprisonment or fines of $50 a day for failing to show proof their children had gotten a chickenpox or hepatitis B shot. Confused, angry or scared but mostly resigned, they were working mothers and fathers trudging toward the courthouse to face the Judge ordering them to get vaccinated or go to jail. Patrolling the scene was a SWAT team of policemen with dogs.

There were a few vaccine safety and informed consent advocates who showed up to witness what happened at the Prince George's County Courthouse, among them Washington D.C. Attorney Jim Moody and autism activist Kelli Ann Davis, of SAFEMINDS and Charles Frohman, representing the American Association of Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) http://www.aapsonline.org/press/nr-11-16- 07.php as well as several Moms with children who developed autism after vaccination.

The U.S. media turned out but they were kept behind barricades and denied access into the building, as were the advocates and other members of the general public. There was no public oversight on what was happening to the parents and children inside.

I listened to or spoke with several mothers leaving the building with their children and learned the sad truth about what was happening behind the closely guarded, closed doors of the Courthouse. The parents were not being asked questions about their child's medical history or whether the children had experienced health problems after previous vaccinations. The parents were not being given information about vaccine side effects or how to monitor their children for signs of vaccine reactions. They were not given forms for religious and medical exemptions to vaccination allowed in Maryland (see the video of my debate on CNN the day before with Vanderbilt's Bill Schaffner, M.D. plus a video of a Saturday CNN interview with Jim Moody

Apparently, the children were being re-vaccinated with not just hepatitis B and chicken pox vaccines, the two new vaccines added to the Maryland school requirement list, but also with other required vaccines for which the public school system could find no record. One mother told me her children were up- to-date on their shots but the school system lost the records and she had to give her children all the required vaccines on the spot or face jail or fines.

My son, Chris, who became learning disabled after suffering a serious reaction to a fourth DPT shot in 1980, traveled with me to Maryland carrying a camera. After growing up watching his Mom work to change one-size-fits-all vaccine policies that were responsible for his vaccine reaction, Chris recently decided he wants to help NVIC put a face on what it means to be vaccine injured in America and what it means when Americans do not have the right to freely exercise informed consent to vaccination.

Chris set up his camera as I talked with a mother hundreds of yards from the front of the Courthouse door. I was about 12 inches inside a row of large cement balls that apparently were erected as a barrier to prevent terrorist attacks. I did not know I wasn't supposed to be talking with this Mom inside the barrier. She was telling me about how she wasn't given any information about vaccines before her children were injected with three vaccines.

All of a sudden, out of the corner of my eye I saw an armed guard with a dog emerge from the Courthouse and walk toward us. I got a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. It was the dread that any citizen of any country in any century has ever felt when an armed guard with a dog starts advancing. As if we were common criminals or terrorists, he yelled and gestured to us to move behind the stones.

We moved without a word. And the sick feeling in the pit of my stomach told me we were being shown the power of the State wielded by that armed guard with the dog, just as parents inside the Courthouse were being shown the power of the State wielded by doctors with syringes.

There has been talk this past week about whether or not U.S. vaccine laws are, indeed, laws or whether they are simply recommendations that do not have the force of law behind them. Because the enactment of public health laws was not defined in the U.S. Constitution as a federal activity, in 1905 the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the power of the states to pass public health laws requiring citizens to be vaccinated or re-vaccinated.

There is now more than 100 years of case law reinforcing the U.S. Supreme Court decision and the right of states to exercise police power to enforce vaccine laws. The method of punishment for not obeying U.S. state vaccine laws is up to the state legislatures which make the laws. Today, many state legislatures have turned over vaccine law-making to unelected government health and education officials, who may enlist state attorneys and judges in the court system to enforce punishments. One of the punishments which many states have chosen when children have not received all state mandated vaccines is to bar children from attending school unless they file and the State approves exemptions to vaccination outlined by the State.

The National Vaccine Information Center receives calls and emails every week from parents who are being harrassed by government officials about filing a religious exemption to vaccination or cannot find a doctor to write a medical exemption. Maryland has a very strictly worded religious exemption that requires the parent to be opposed to all vaccines in order to obtain it.

Those parents, who do not vaccinate their children and do not either make arrangements with the State to homeschool them or successfully file a state-approved exemption, are in violation of another state law: truancy laws. Failure to send your child to school in Maryland between the ages of 5 and 16 is a misdemeanor punishable by fines and jail time or both. This is the law which the Maryland government officials moved to enforce when they enlisted the help of State's Attorney Glenn Ivey (D) and Judge C. Philip Nichols to turn parents of unvaccinated children into criminals.

In one news report, Judge Nichols was quoted as observing that the children looked unhappy waiting in line for their vaccinations. He is quoted as saying "It's cute. It looks like their parents are dragging them to church."

The big difference between being dragged into a Courthouse to get vaccinated and being dragged to church is that an hour of prayer rarely results in catastrophic brain injury or death. I still wonder how many of those children, who were injected with multiple vaccines in the Courthouse, are having vaccine reactions today. Their parents, many of whom are uninformed about how to recognize vaccine reactions, will never know what happened to their children if they regress into chronic poor health after the shots they were forced to get on Saturday.

We know that attacks on the religious and philosophical exemptions to vaccination in America are on the increase and are being led by vaccine patent holders like Paul Offit, M.D. and others who want to force vaccination.

In 1996, a sixteen year old Milwaukee boy was handcuffed, stripped and jailed overnight because he hadn't shown public school or county health authorities proof that he had gotten a second MMR shot. What happened in Maryland this weekend is a final wake-up call for America.

Dozens of new vaccines are being rushed to market in the next decade and most will target children and adults for mandated use. Limiting the power of the State to force vaccination is all that stands between the people and tyranny.

Vaccines or else: Parents blast order for schoolchildren

UPPER MARLBORO, Maryland (CNN) -- A crowd of frustrated parents gathered on a chilly Saturday morning outside Prince George's County Circuit Court to comply with an order from the school system to have their children vaccinated -- or else.

Prince George's County State's Attorney Glenn Ivey, whose office began the effort, was at the courthouse to answer questions.

Judge C. Philip Nichols, who signed the letters threatening parents with jail or fines, said he felt the tactic worked.

"We got a thousand kids back in school just by sending one letter," he said.

Nichols ordered parents to come to court Saturday to either immunize the children on the spot, or to provide proof that they already had their shots, according to The Associated Press.

Families who failed to comply could face 10 to 30 days in jail.

"[The schools] started out with phone calls, even home visits, and this became a last resort for parents who wouldn't comply one way or another," Ivey said.

All states require school-age children to be immunized against diseases such as mumps, measles and polio. But the parents said they objected to the heavy-handed way Ivey has handled the issue.

Families could opt out of the required shots by providing medical or religious waivers. Citing cases of serious adverse reactions, some parents worry about the safety of vaccines.

"The patient should have a choice. I just don't think Big Brother should have that much power," said Donna Hurlock, a physician and activist concerned about parental rights and privacy issues. Video Watch experts with opposing views debate mandatory vaccinations »

Jim Moody was among the parents protesting the policy.

"There are serious considerations for safety that need to be addressed before compelling people to get vaccines," he said. Video Watch why parents are upset »

Public health officials said the benefits of vaccinations against childhood diseases outweigh the risks.

Some parents who received letters saying they were not in compliance with the vaccination mandate complained that it was the fault of the school system, which they described as disorganized.

"It was the school's mistake. [My daughter] didn't have documentation. This is the second or third time we had to redo her again because her shot records got misplaced," Ron Brooking told CNN.

Authorities said they will decide in the next few days what to do with families who refused to obey the vaccination order.

Ivey was still mulling whether to prosecute parents not in compliance.

"We have to sit down with school and health services," he told the AP. "We haven't ruled anything out. We need to figure out where we stand."

The parents of about 1,700 children received letters from Ivey reminding them of the consequences for not complying, said John White, spokesman for Prince George's County Public Schools.

That number was down to 1,111 by Thursday, and was reduced to 939 children by Saturday evening, he said.

White said that number was the lowest since since a law requiring additional vaccinations went into effect January 1.

But "obviously, we still have some more work to do," he told the AP.

101 vaccinations were administered at the courthouse and 71 records were updated, he said.

Two months into the school year, more than 2,000 students in this suburban county outside the nation's capital had yet to get the shots they needed to attend class. So the school system decided it was through playing nice.

Parents in Prince George's County have been ordered to appear at a special court hearing Saturday where they will be given a choice: Get their children vaccinated on the spot or risk up to 10 days in jail and fines.

It is one of the strongest efforts made by a U.S. school system to ensure its youngsters receive their shots.

Prince George's County school officials and prosecutors said parents have been duly warned about the need for vaccinations over the past year. They said the goal isn't to throw parents in jail but to protect public health and get kids who have been barred from school back to class.

"How can you in good conscience allow your child to miss school and their education for no particular reason?" said John White, spokesman for the 132,000-student school system.

At the courthouse, the health department will have a makeshift clinic to administer vaccines. Parents will be given the chance to offer the judge an excuse for why they didn't get their kids vaccinated. Under Maryland law, parents can obtain exemptions for religious or medical reasons.

Those who fail to show up - and those who fail to offer a valid excuse and still refuse the shots - could be prosecuted under truancy laws and face possible jail time and fines of $50 per day.

Prosecutors do not expect to actually charge anyone on Saturday.

"The message is get your kids vaccinated or get an exemption," said Prince George's County State's Attorney Glenn Ivey. "You can't just sit on the fence." Barbara Loe Fisher, head of National Vaccine Information Center, a vaccine skeptic group, complained: "It is terrorizing parents. When you have the threat of going to jail, it is hard to make an informed decision."

Even the judge who opened his court is somewhat skeptical about hauling parents into court. William Missouri, administrative judge for the county circuit court, agreed to the Saturday session and said it would probably prod some parents to comply. But the problem "may have been ratcheted up to a level it should not have been at this time."

School officials said that it is not clear why parents are not complying, but that some may have religious or medical objections, while others may have failed to turn in the paperwork, or their kids' addresses were outdated.

The prospect of stiff penalties appears to have worked already. Last week, when the court notices were sent to parents, 2,300 students had not been properly immunized. As of Friday afternoon, only about 1,100 remained on the list.

Maryland, like all states, requires children to be immunized against several childhood illnesses, including polio, mumps and measles. In recent years, it has required that students up to high-school age be vaccinated against hepatitis B and chicken pox.

After that, thousands of students - most of them high schoolers - were found to lack the required immunizations. Parents were sent letters and visited at home, and the school system even offered free vaccinations.

"Once the word gets out, it will definitely work," Bob Ross, head of the parent-teachers association at Surrattsville High School in Clinton, said of the new get-tough approach. "Parents are going to have to set aside some time. Parents have a responsibility to help protect the public health."

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. - Hundreds of grumbling parents facing a threat of jail lined up at a courthouse Saturday to either prove that their school-age kids already had their required vaccinations or see that the youngsters submitted to the needle.

The get-tough policy in the Washington suburbs of Prince George's County was one of the strongest efforts made by any U.S. school system to ensure its youngsters receive their required immunizations.

Two months into the school year, school officials realized that more than 2,000 students in the county still didn't have the vaccinations they were supposed to have before attending class.

So Circuit Court Judge C. Philip Nichols ordered parents in a letter to appear at the courthouse Saturday and either get their children vaccinated on the spot or risk up to 10 days in jail. They could also provide proof of vaccination or an explanation why their kids didn't have them.

By about 8:30 a.m., the line of parents stretched outside the courthouse in the county on the east side of Washington.

Many of them complained that their children already were properly immunized but the school system had misplaced the records. They said efforts to get the paperwork straightened out had been futile.

"It was very intimidating," Territa Wooden of Largo said of the letter. She said she presented the paperwork at the courthouse Saturday and resolved the matter.

"I could be home asleep. My son had his shots," said Veinell Dickens of Upper Marlboro, who also blamed errant paperwork.

Aloma Martin of Fort Washington brought her children, Delontay and Taron, in 10th and 6th grade, for their hepatitis shots. She said she had been trying to get the vaccinations for more than a month, since the school system sent a warning letter. She had an appointment for Monday, but came to the courthouse to be safe.

"It was very heavy handed," she said of the county's action. "From that letter, it sounded like they were going to start putting us in jail."

School officials deemed the court action a success. School system spokesman John White said the number of children lacking vaccinations dropped from 2,300 at the time the judge sent the letter to about 1,100 Friday. Hundreds more were expected to be in compliance after Saturday's session.

Officials said they did not know how many students got shots Saturday and how many merely had paperwork problems. It was also unclear how many claimed medical or religious exemptions to the requirement.

White said the school system, with about 132,000 students, has been trying for two years to get parents to comply with state law. That law allows children to skip vaccines if they have a medical or religious exemption.

Maryland, like all states, requires children to be immunized against several childhood illnesses including polio, mumps and measles. In recent years, it also has required that students up to high school age be vaccinated against hepatitis B and chicken pox.

Nichols said nobody actually came before him Saturday, but he was there if any parent asked to see him.

The judge noted the unhappy looks of some of the kids in line waiting for vaccinations.

"It's cute. It looks like their parents are dragging them to church," Nichols said.

Any children who still lack immunizations could be expelled. Their parents could then be brought up on truancy charges, which can result in a 10-day jail sentence for a first offense and 30 days for a second.

Prince George's State's Attorney Glenn Ivey couldn't say Saturday whether he would prosecute parents who fail to comply.

"We have to sit down with school and health services," he said. "We haven't ruled anything out. We need to figure out where we stand."

Several organizations opposed to mass vaccinations demonstrated outside the courthouse. While the medical consensus is that vaccines are safe and effective, some people blame immunizations for a rise in autism and other medical problems.

"People should have a choice" in getting their children immunized, said Charles Frohman, representing a physicians' group opposed to vaccines.
