Aggh, last night was trying. It took forever to get Liv to bed last night. Not to mention at 4a.m. she got up & self talked the rest of the night. I could not get her to sleep. Sometimes it is so hard & I am so tired & have a full day of work today. None of my normal tehniques worked last night. I wish I knew what causes this?

When my son was younger. Melatonin, magnesium, and lavender saved our sleep. Now he sleeps like a rock unless it is time foe Saturday morning cartoons!!!

None of us would get any sleep around here if Wynn wasn't on melatonin. He has been taking it since he was about 5 years old. It helps him fall asleep, and the time-release formula helps him sleep until morning. Unfortunately, one of his other meds is causing him to wet the bed--never did this as a little guy--and so we still end up awake in the middle of the night...but he will usually go back to sleep after a bit. Best wishes for a good night's sleep.

Daniel used to stay up for all but 2 hours a night. He couldn't sleep when he was constipated. Surprisingly, when we got him on Prozac, a side effect, loosening the bowels, took care of the sleep problems. A friend of mine is finally getting some sleep now that her teenage son is getting treatment for bipolar disorder. I wish I could tell you an infallible treatment. Is there a respite-care service where you live? You might be able to find help through the local Agency on Aging-- they provide CNA's who will come to your house and stay up all night if needed. They helped us in Indiana, and I know there's such a thing here in Arkansas, they might be a nationally funded agency?

It is definitely the hardest part of spectrum life...and I think each kid is effected differently and for different reasons. I hope tonite goes better.

WOW, has to be something the storm flew in... Julian was up until 1:30am. Today I get a call from my sons school...conversation went sort of like this... we are concerned your son was sleeping in class...we took him over to the security office and aksed him if he was on any medications, or what had he taken. He is new to this school, so he didn't share anything about Julian with them. So I of course gave the teacher a crash course in autism 101. Said thank you for caring and hung up. I looked at my son, started laughing and said "they think your on drugs". The drug is called...ASD (Autism Sleep Deprivation).

I wish I knew also. I think sleep disturbances are one of the hardest parts of being a parent of a child with autism. I am a single parent also and it's so tough after being up all night to have to go to work and perform like nothing is wrong. I don't think Chad slept through the night until he was 4 years old and now that he is 16 , He still has trouble a few times a month with sleep issues. It just seems so effortless by him to stay up while it takes so much from me. Good Luck and hope you get to escape to dreamland tonight
