Generation Autism
by KevinLivsDad on 03.14.08 - public - 167 visits

I remember a ped. that has been practicing over 20 years. When ever they came across an Autistic Child it was a novelty that they would parade to interns.

I know principles, elem. ed teachers who have been in their professions for 20+ years who have NEVER experienced the flood of truly special needs ASD children. They are overwhelmed & say it is not the latest diagnostic expansion of ASD criteria. Even before the diagnostic criteria changed they all said these kids would have been special needs children with the need for specialized ed even 20+ years ago.

I have come across so many friends, family, & co-workers that have children with ASD. Just by my experience it is overwhelming and a true epidemic that threatens a generation. We all need to make ASD the emergency that it is. Lets make the most of ASD awareness month in April & raise some hell (awareness) to deal with Generation Autism's epidemic

well when I graduated in 1996 in my psyc. books there was a mention of autism, a full paragraph on the subject. Now you go to school and you can specialize in it. Something went wrong in the 90's BIG TIME.

My Mom was a college student in the 1950's. The word AUTISM was written on the board by a teacher and it was talked about. The students were told "If you ever get to see one of these kids, do, but more than likely you will never see one in your life time." Mom now 75..is in a support group for Grandmother of autistic childern..My how things change in 50 years..I hope the next 50 Autism becomes something you study in a dark part of American History...

I was discussing this with our pediatrican about 2 years ago - why the rise, what is different in the world. He said that the only thing he could think that was different in the 20 years he was a doc was "t.v." - television! So he wanted to replace the refrigerator mom theory with the television mother theory.

There was a question out there for a while, whether more kids were receiving the autism diagnosis when they didn't really have it. All I can say is, look at these kids-- to me there's no question that there's more autism out there. I agree, awareness needs to be raised.

I agree. Something is making this happen besides my genetic legacy combined with my husband's.
