I am a 46 year old married mom of two boys. One of which has special needs. My oldest son Kyle is 14, he simply amazes me. He is a very bright young man that shows an immense amount of love, patience and compassion for his little brother. My youngest Nicolas is 6. He was diagnosed with a rare form of epilepsy (Infantile Spasms/West Syndrome) at 6 months old. He was treated with the drug Sabril and seizures stopped within 3 days. He was weaned off the medication after six months and has remained seizure free since.
Update: April 24,2007- Nicolas displayed what appeared to be a silent seizure at school today. The episode lasted nearly a minute. I am a bit worried, as I have been told that children with autism can go on to develop seizure disorders later on in life... hoping it was a fluke and will not become a regular occurance.

Having a child with special needs certainly has some challenges. Honestly, I can say that it has really made me look at alot of things differently and appreciate alot of what I have taken for granted. Nicolas is non verbal but has a smile that says so much. He is a very happy, energetic boy that we are so blessed to have as part of our family. Nicolas was diagnosed with Autism on April 23,2007. He was due to start public in the fall of 2007. He is presently under "stay put" in a private school for Autism/Developmental Delay. We have spent most of the past year advocating his needs to our local school district to ensure he will receive an appropriate public education. Unfortunately this hasn't been very easy. We are optimistic now that we have legal assistance that this situation will soon be resolved. Other than all this... I work part time (20 hrs)a week outside my home, the rest of my time is spent doing the usual mommy things, like organizing appointments, shopping, laundry, and the dreaded COOKING. ( I only have a kitchen because it came with the house ) I am fortunate, as I have alot of family, and friends that are very understanding and supportive... They help make my life complete!
