My name is Michelle, I've been married to my wonderful husband (Ray) for 17 yrs. I am the mother of 4 wonderful children. My first born son was diagnosed with autism in 1995 when he was 2 yrs. old. We enrolled him in numerous programs and had therapy for him in our home in the evenings. His schedule was very gruelling for a 2 yr old boy. He was very combattive, aggressive, extremely hyperactive and non verbal. He stimmed constantly (verbally and physically).
When Ray was diagnosed with autism I grieved many losses for him. The biggest was the thought of him not being able to play sports or even know what a ball was. I can proudly say that Raymond is a first string lineman for his tackle football team. He lives and breathes sports. He is a true prodigy of hard work and determination from his supportive community.
I've had many parents tell me "I would have never guessed he was autistic!" .. This phrase says it all.
I want to thank all the parents, doctors, therapists, administrators, and school personnel who truly believe in our children; it's through them that Raymond is living a very social normal life.
I am blessed beyond measure.

Here we go again ....
My autistic 15 yr old son is in full swing. He is trying out for the Freshman Team at his High School. He started a few days after school let out. His school is two blocks away so he is able to walk to and from practice. He is very responsible and never late. He LOVES football. He opted not to go on vacation with us so he can still make his practices. I tried to push the issue that his coach said family vacations were ok to take time off and he said it had nothing to do with that .. he said, "Mom, I need to practice .. I signed up to play and my teammates are counting on me." He has been training all year with a personal trainer to get his speed, stamina and strength up. His body is starting to look chiselled and 'buff.' I cannot believe the dedication this kid has. He's never complained about the weather or having to get up early; he's my inspiration when I feel I'm too tired to do what I need to do. Our other other son is a stellar athlete and has started his football season too. Raymond can't make his games right now because of his schedule so he asks me to video tape them then he critique's his brother when they watch it together. I tell you .. 13 yrs ago I would've been happy with Raymond just calling me "Mommy" at 15 ... he's soared way past any dreams I had for him. He should make the team, but I pray he doesn't get hurt .. these kids are HUGE! God bless our football team. Go Monsoons!
Today we are having a birthday party for Raymond. We have a huge family so there will be plenty of noise and laughter. Raymond just LOVES huge parties. The miracle is ... he is socially on target as a teenager. He made sure to let me know he is inviting about 10 friends, some of them girls .. who would've thunk? My son has no idea how awestruck I am by his accomplishments. I have three other children that I admire, but with Raymond, I realize, it's a gift. God has given this kid a wonderful funny sense of humor, a kind heart, a handsome self image; a chance to be a Father, Husband, and Friend. I can't count my blessings fast enough. I hear him downstairs right now watching the Olympics and he is teasing his siblings .. a normal setting ... a far cry from his early years.
