Motherof4's Bio

Hi, all!  I live with my husband of 21 years and our 4 children and numerous pets.  Our oldest has high-functioning autism.  The rest of the kids are, apparently, normal.  I think that siblings can really help a kid with autism, but no doubt there are some costs to the NT siblings of children with autism.  That said, Daniel is very kind and helpful to his siblings and the opportunity to be socially competent at home is good for him.  I just hope to help him be socially competent in the wider world, too.

Strangely Polite
by Motherof4 on 09.13.08 - public - 106 visits

The conversation this morning went something like this:

Me: "Daniel, please wash your dish."

Daniel: "Oh, thanks, Mom."

Me: "You forgot to put the milk away."

Daniel: "Oh, thanks, Mom."

Me: "Please don't stand on your sister's homework."

Daniel: "Oh, sorry, Mom!"

Me: "Please put the shades up and put the plants on the windowsill."

Daniel: "Oh, thaaanks, Mom!"

I'd assume he was sarcastic with that last one, but he doesn't do that. He was genuinely happy to be asked to do a chore, I guess... And, it's not that I'm not grateful for his politeness, it's just that it really makes me laugh to be THANKED for bossing him around!

teaching mannerism, well I like you was amazed by just how polite Julian can be...today we took David over to the early start kids program, and he got to see all the ladies from when he was a little guy...and he very politely shook hands and before he let go he would kiss the ladies hand...very gentlemen like...wow this casanova is someone to watch out for...

I can relate to this scenerio. Jared often repetitively says "Yes Mother" when I boss him around. Thanks for highlighting another wonderfulness of being different. Janis
