Hi,
My name is Marisa and I am a mom to a wonderful 4 yr old boy.
My son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS and has some sensory issues. He always wants MORE MORE MORE and Faster, Louder, Stronger.....He can sit for hours watching a fan spin or watching the sounds, lights and crowds in Time Square.
I have had many sleepless nights trying to gather up as much information as possible to help him out!!
I would love to hear what is working for your child and yes, I do understand every child is different.
Also, please be kind.
We are all here for the same reasons I think and that is to network, chat, and support each one of our kids!!
God Bless!!

Dylan has always LOVED music. He was never shown how to hold the violin but in this picture I took, he just knew. He can listen to music for hours and he is not picky! He can follow the beat and sometimes holds his fingers up like he is conducting an orchestra. His love of music fascinates me. He can create his own music as well on his keyboard. Nothing too fancy but it is pleasant to listen to. He can sing songs on pitch and know the words but can not speak them if asked. I am from a family of musicians. My great-grandfather was an opera singer, my father played the trumpet, my uncle was an all around musician(knew how to play most instruments) and unbelievable performer on stage and I play the drums. Somehow I feel this love for music is more than just in Dylan's blood. I was wondering how Music affects your children? Do you find that music brings something out of them that is usually unseen? Can't wait to hear your responses!

Yes, yes and yes. My son loves all music and instruments. I was thinking of buying a violin next. He has perfect pitch and memorizes all the songs and the track numbers on the CD's. When a song comes on he says the track number (part of hyperlexia). We have to take his CD player almost everywhere. My husband is musically inclined and plays Bass. I however don't have the music gene. I love music but can't play or sing worth a hoot.

Oh, I forgot to mention that Angel decided he wanted to play the violin...he has his first recital at the end of May...I give all my kids the opportunity do to what they like...even if they change their mind later...Apparently the Tahrumara Indians in Mexico play the violins...we think this is where Angel gets the gene...his father is from over there.

Wynn used to memorize the tunes in what seemed to be perfect pitch.....the words were another story! Now, as a teenager, he doesn't listen to music as much at all, but loves classical and often laughs and points out the "funny parts", and the "scary parts" and will sometimes her things in the music that make him very nervous or over-stimulated. I wish I could be in his head for just one day.

I was just recalling when my first grandson was born...he was a premee...born at 6 months gestation...his wt...1 lb...4 oz. 11 inches long...prognosis NOT GOOD...Angel Gabriel Olivarria-Salgado was the only premee at children's hospital to have speakers in his incubator and his own CD. player with a drawer full of AA Batteries...This grandma made sure Adriana, had the nurses playing Mozart for Angel 24 hours a day...Angel today is going to be 8 years old in June...in the sencond grade...and shows NO! developmental delays...I believe GOD and Mozart together had a lot to do with Angels successes in life...considering he didn't start out so well...Miracles and Angels are a part of my life...now I just need Julian grab on to a miracle and run with it to the top of his Mt. Everest.

It really makes me wonder why he can relate so well to music. He is a different child when he plays or hears music. Balanced is the word Emily, you got it! So interesting to hear about the Mariachi music too! Our kids really are amazing :)

Julian has always loved the classical movies just because of the music...The music he seems to like the best is the mariachi music...I was told by a hispanic family who's daughter is autistic...that in Mexico they were told that this is because of all the instruments beging played at the same time simulates the ear and brain...So when Julian is making noises we say he is dinging...when he is stimming (banging to hear and feel the vibrations) we say he is playing an instrument...I love tohear all the differnet pitches and sounds he makes especially at night when he can not get to sleep...he puts us to sleep.

Yes! Daniel seems so much more balanced after he plays his trumpet. He needs to listen to music after he comes home from school. I think it helps him recover from a busy school day.
