Nellie_Rose's Bio

I'm a 29 year old single mother of two living in Brookline, MA. I have a 9 year old son and an 11 year old daughter.

Devan is a great little brother to his older sister but we still have our challenges. Sydney is a sweet, affectionate young lady with Autism who is growing with each day. Over the years Sydney has earned some silly nicknames like the TV terrorist (because she's always turning it off when we're trying to watch) and the condiment crusader (because she's made some serious messes with ketchup) she's been finding better ways of expressing her needs and desires lately and that makes us proud.

Autism's Impact on My Career
by Nellie_Rose on 07.01.09 - public - 93 visits

Because my employer is so understanding of what my daughter's diagnosis requires of me I can't say that it's impacted my career in any tangible way. Yet. I think it's had an impact in terms of where I can go in my current position though. I'm constantly in crisis mode, trying to figure out what we're going to do about vacations, extended day, etc. For all of the awareness and inclusion going on in the world any programs for a child on the severe end of the spectrum seem to require the amount of research, leg work and advocating that working full time just does not allow. Even though they're understanding of my situation, when all is said and done employers want someone who is dependable - even family-friendly employers. I used to have the support of my family to help with scheduling difficulties but I don't have that anymore.Besides, I had children so that I could raise them, not shuffle them back and forth to various caretakers. I'd be happy to be a stay at home mom but I haven't found a way of doing that yet. I've often thought that I may have to find some way of making autism my job in order to accommodate my family's needs but I'm not sure in what context that would be.

Thanks 4muskateers, that's exactly why I'm on here. Maybe I'm being negative but I just wanted to add that my employer probably knows that I'm unlikely to find another organization willing to accept my need for accommodation and, therefore, can get away with paying me less. It's not their fault I don't have my ducks in a row but if I did I could probably get double my salary, especially if I could go back to school - which I can't right now. Vicious cycle...
