I am the mother of five children, the youngest Michael or Mickie as we like to call him, was diagnosed with Autism at 22 months old. After years of early intervention therapy, which didn't work. I learned through trial and error that he had underlying biomedical problems that culminated in Autism like symptoms, including, chronic digestive problems since the age of one, when he received the MMR vaccine.
With biomedical interventions, gfcf and SCD diets, Mickie's body is starting to heal. Some of the most severe symptoms, head banging, night waking, self injurious behaviors are almost gone.
He lost all speech by the age of three. He is now 10 years old and has just started to say mama, for the first time in almost 8 years.

To fight to get Mickie out of Public school. He is in a county program, that sucks so bad. It is weak and to me nothing more than a bunch of babysitters.
I got a call from our home district yesterday and I can sense that they are going to fight me every step of the way. When she heard about the ABA program I want, she through in that........___Well that school is more restrictive.......and I thought, well duh, I know that.
The county principal also called me and after hearing me say where I wanted Mickie placed, she proceeded to tell me that she was going to look into what else they had to offer. As if I didn't know that all she will offer is more of the same mediocrity. I told her that I had just called as a courtesy, to let her know what I was going to do.
Wish me luck......I'm going to need it.

Get independent evaluations and don't show the district all your cards! My friend is being sued by her district for breach of contract. She pulled her child out of the district program. She self funded the childs program and is seeking reimbursement from the district.

I have been homeschooling JUlian for 3 years now...Just ablut an hour ago I registered Julian with Zion Academy a national accredited private school...that will allow us to continue to homeschool...all materials are sent to us...modifications are allowed...And we are under legal protection for private schools...I will continue to do all the ABA, RDI, DTT, PEC's and adaptive P.E. here at home...and most important Julian will be able to use his form of communication (PEC'S) to answer all questions. we will be recording work sessions too. Homeschooling isn't for everyone...but I found so much hidden abilities in Julian since he has been home...that he will never go back to a public school. check out Wright's Law and Nolo's Special Education Law Books...they are very good, and I found them easy to understand. Best wishes for you both...I know you can make this happen for Mikie...Love Diana.

Get on line and learn the laws for your state. The best thing I ever did was to spend an hour or so with a sp. ed. lawyer and have him walk me through the law, the language etc...I was then able to sit in the meetings with the school and sound intelligent--and was also more aware of the law then most of the rest of the team....And, my son got the placement that he needed... Also, another piece of advice that was shared with me by another mom: Always keep your calm and treat the team respectfully. Most likely you will be working with them for many years--even if they approve a different placement, they will still be involved in the IEP process--so don't make enemies....Good luck!

I don't know what the laws are in California, but you really do have the legal right to whatever schooling you think is best for your Mickie. Hang in there and you'll get what you need for him.

Key word they used - "restrictive". The law talks about placing the child in the "least restrictive environment". Originally to keep kids with disabilities in the classroom and NOT segregated. But if appropriate services are not offered, he needs to have a placement that is more in line with his needs. ABA/DTT is the best arguement to use b/c it is a proven teaching technique for ASD kiddos. My son receives 5 hours a week in school ABA therapy (not all discreet trials), they also use some ABA teaching methods to teach academics and use it for behavior issues. 2 hours of that 5 hours is directed by/conducted by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). The other three hours are conducted by "trained staff". There are guidelines for the supervisor and the trained staff - and if your county program cannot provide the staff or thte programming you certainly can go outside. You sound well prepared. Take your game face and don't get too emotional and you will get what he needs. Good for you!
