I am the mother of five children, the youngest Michael or Mickie as we like to call him, was diagnosed with Autism at 22 months old. After years of early intervention therapy, which didn't work. I learned through trial and error that he had underlying biomedical problems that culminated in Autism like symptoms, including, chronic digestive problems since the age of one, when he received the MMR vaccine.
With biomedical interventions, gfcf and SCD diets, Mickie's body is starting to heal. Some of the most severe symptoms, head banging, night waking, self injurious behaviors are almost gone.
He lost all speech by the age of three. He is now 10 years old and has just started to say mama, for the first time in almost 8 years.

I am getting a statement ready for tomorow's IEP meeting, when I'll be asking for the school to place Mickie in a private ABA program.
What would be the differences that I could point out between the two programs?
Applied Behavior Analysis vs Special program for moderate to severe autism. ABA is intensive and their program just looks like paid babysitting, but I want to be more convincing without being rude.
Any ideas?

Tell them that Mickie really thrives on structure and that ABA provides more structure than you observed at their program. Explain that he needs a very specific type of learning environment and does better with focused learning that is one-on-one. Explain his need for an environment that requires his focused attention and provides a rigid structure. When you speak about their program, think of the things that would not work for Mickie - was it unstructures, did it not provide a set schedule, was there a lack of one-on-one instruction, did they lack visual schedules and reminders, was it cluttered vs. organized, were children involved in tasks of their own (vs. specific learning tasks), etc. Good luck at your meeting! I would tell them he needs a more demanding environment and more personalized instruction than their program provides. Has Mickie had ABA in the past and done well? If he has, I would bring up the gains he made with it. Let them know you have seen their program in action and that you know that it is not the right environment for your son. Good luck tomorrow!
