Zurama's Bio

I am the mother of five children, the youngest Michael or Mickie as we like to call him, was diagnosed with Autism at 22 months old. After years of early intervention therapy, which didn't work. I learned through trial and error that he had underlying biomedical problems that culminated in Autism like symptoms, including, chronic digestive problems since the age of one, when he received the MMR vaccine.
With biomedical interventions, gfcf  and SCD diets, Mickie's body is starting to heal. Some of the most severe symptoms, head banging, night waking, self injurious behaviors are almost gone.
He lost all speech by the age of three. He is now 10 years old and has just started to say mama, for the first time in almost 8 years.

Autistic not Retarted or Slow
by Zurama on 02.11.08 - public - 129 visits

This week has been full of surprises. Mickie who has been unable to have a consistent form of communication learned 3 sign language words in 2 days.

Four months of intensive biomedical and diet interventions are finally starting to pay off!

Two weeks ago he was denied speech, because an IQ test showed him to have severe autism and retarded, but the word they used is low cognition.

Tonight I decided that on the next IEP meeting next week. I will demand that any labels other that autism be removed from his file.

No more labels, no more mental retardation, no more slow, no more low cognition. I will also reject IQ tests, because they are unethical. It's a way to set them up for failure. A way to give up on our kids.

Mickie will rise about his autism and it will not define him!

Yeah for mickie - I'll never forget when my son started signing. AFter 2.5 years of signing around him, it took 6 weeks of EFA supps and he started signing. A year later, talking. My son goes to a communications disorders school which is enrolling more and more kids on the spectrum. They use three modes of communication - ASL, PECS and speech. My son needed all three to get started before he was even willing to make a sound at speech therapy - over a year later. Hang in there

You can have the lable removed if you choose, when I had them drop it from Julian IEP, the way they treated him was different. They now had to give services they were trying to deny. OH! I still wanted speech, but I changed the terminology on them. I asked that he be given... language comprehension, and communication skills. these to be carried out by sign language and by the picture exchange communication system by Andy Bondy. I would not accept a watered down version. try stating it this way and they can not say no. they are obligated to teach a form of communication. Caution....they may try and state that he is not hearing impaired to teach sign, but you can show were autistic children are using sign with PECS. Best wishes. HURRAY one more bio-medical mom. Check us out, and see if you would like to join us in speading the awareness for autism.

How AWE-some way to go Mickie on learning 3 signs. I hated the first time I saw Mental retardation on my son's phy report. Yes he will rise above his Austism. Amen!!! Keep up the great fight for your son mom :)
