carmel66's Bio

I am mom to a wonderful 7 yo boy with dwarfism, autism and apraxia. He is the light of my life. I also have a 3.5 yo daughter who is NT and full of life. It's like being a mom for the first time - all over again. I have a great husband and we own our own consulting company. Yeah - life is a little hectic here.

The Autism Community Agrees That....

you are going to need a sense of humor in order to get through this without losing your freaking mind. You need to be able to laugh - maybe not at the moment it happens, maybe not for a year - but you need to just shake you head and laugh at the absurity of...of...well the absurd things that autism brings into our lives.

Things as simple as baking at midnight b/c you forgot you were out of gluten free bread for lunch. Or having to remember the location of this week's treasured trinket so as to avoid an incident later. Leaving things in the same place due to OCD issues that pop up. Poop in the VCR. Being able to interprete a stranger's child's garbled speech in a park better than the parent, b/c you've been deciphering speech for 10 years.

Laughter is, after all, the best medicine.

So true! I wished I would have learned the gift of laughter years ago...But, through autism, I now understand its healing properties!

Yes I'm with you on that I would much rather laugh then feel sorry for myself. If you look hard enough u can see the laughter in the things that they do or even say.

Surely God wouldn't have given a person a child with Autism without having first checked their credentials and making sure they had a sense of humor? My daughter is getting ready to be 4 and just now I have been able to really just accept and laugh about her little quirky ways. My daughter loves to push anything with wheels and you wouldn't believe the things that have wheels that I've never noticed. Lets just say she has pushed trash cans, mop buckets, water hose, stroller, walmart basket, backpack, wheelchairs, bikes, scooters, skateboards, etc. She even pushes pvc pipe and umbrellas around because it gives her the same feeling. I never knew so many things had wheels! Laughter is the best medicine!
