Haircut??

I was thinking about haircuts while waiting for my son to fall asleep tonite - and it's been a real evolution for us.
When he was younger, smaller and still very weak it was easy - plop him on my lap and hold his arms down. He hated it but it was manageable. We knew he was getting stronger and one time the barber told us he could use the scissors on him anymore - he just squirmed too much and we couldn't hold him still anymore. He hated it and he was stronger. That was the time we got what we refer to as "the cancer cut". He has an enormous head, he had beautiful blond thick hair and then...the cancer cut. I thought the teachers at his school were going to cry. Even Carson wanted a hat the next morning...poor kid. It was the last time he went to that barber.
The next haircut, we had had some sensory integration work done and he's gotten much better. Now he sits in the chair himself and just needs help with the "buzzer" part of the cut. And needless to say, the haircuts have gotten better too.

Yes, I always say there was a reason I decided to become a cosmetologist (just one of the many career's I've had). I got out of it many years ago - long long before kids because I just got tired of the "fake" lifestyle. Little did I know then it would serve me well as there is no way I could take Nathan to either a barber shop or even a salon. That would be a nightmare!!! It's taken four years of working with him but he now can sit pretty still through it (he gets a buzz cut) and sometimes I am even able to get the little hairs around his ears (the ones the clippers can never seem to get) with my shears! He likes to hold the dusting brush and will tell me when he's itchy and hand me the brush! When I'm done I give it back to him. After years of working with him on this - haircuts have gotten so much better! YAY! for Nathan and YAY! for his "stylist" :-D

Who could have predicted that haircuts would be such a big issue?.....I remember the first time I took my son to the barber. He was 3 years old and I had always done the little trims in the past. But he had grown squirmy for me and I thought the barber might do a better job. Well, once Wynn saw the big scissors and heard the loud buzzing, he climbed me like a tree! The barber chased his head around, scissors in one hand, comb in the other, and looked like some kind of butcher trying to corner a scared chicken. It was a nightmare, and I vowed to never enter a barbershop again....And over time, we developed our own groove. Nothing fancy, but safe, for sure.
