I am mom to a wonderful 7 yo boy with dwarfism, autism and apraxia. He is the light of my life. I also have a 3.5 yo daughter who is NT and full of life. It's like being a mom for the first time - all over again. I have a great husband and we own our own consulting company. Yeah - life is a little hectic here.

My 6 year old son, who celebrates despite autism, GOT IT this year. He chose a costume, He excitedly tried it on, He asked to make sure I packed it for school. He ran around the house tonite bossing me around "costume on", "basket", "wings on", "go out". My husband said our son was running down the sidewalk toward our neighbors' homes (I stayed to hand out candy with our 2 year old who is still trying to come to terms with the scary part of Halloween). He knocked, he tried to say "trick or treat".
He stood by the window when he got home and let us know more kids were coming to the door by signing "more friends, more friends".
Sure he won't eat the candy, the costume is a MAJOR sensory hurdle (that he tolerated), he fretted about the pumpkins and if they were still lit. But it was so different from last year - in a good way.
Time to celebrate with a glass of red.

Carmel, kudos to you and your son for a triumphant Halloween! My autistic son is now 14 and had to go with another 14 yr old to 'cruise' the neighborhood. He really didn't feel like hanging out with his younger siblings. I couldn't help but smile when I saw him walk off with his buddy and his pillow case in hand thinking, "What a gift God gave me. My son is growing into a fine young man." Honestly, I wish they could stay young forever. Growing pains hurt.
