carmel66's Bio

I am mom to a wonderful 7 yo boy with dwarfism, autism and apraxia. He is the light of my life. I also have a 3.5 yo daughter who is NT and full of life. It's like being a mom for the first time - all over again. I have a great husband and we own our own consulting company. Yeah - life is a little hectic here.

Elevators
by carmel66 on 03.20.08 - public - 120 visits

My son has a couple things that he especially focuses on - one is elevators (another is hotels - but I think that is because they usually contain...elevators!). Think about it - elevators are cool. I remember the first time he really noticed one. I can't remember where we were - it was a hotel in some city and we were sitting in the lobby (probably waiting for my DH to hit the men's room). And I just was looking at my son, and he watched a man get into the elevator. The doors shut for a minute or so. The doors opened. And the man was GONE. He looked at me with this wide eyed expression. It's been love ever since. Luckily he does not need to actually ride them any more. He likes the doors and number panels best. He and his sister were "playing elevator" in our room on vacation. The closet doors were huge mirrored things that slid back and forth on tracks. They loved it!
More recently, our living room looks like a scaled down version of Boston. The Prudential Center, Customs House, Marriott - all in old boxes. I have built and constructed more elevators and diaramas of elevators and buttons for closet doors to make elevators than most folks. I think, by this point, I should qualify for a pension at OTIS (and yes, we have called them and NO they don't make minitures for sale).

How fun! What a neat obsession! My uncle works for OTIS--repairing elevators.....I wish he could get Carson a custom elevator from OTIS! You are such a good mom--for helping him make his creations, and for allowing your house to be decorated with the creations! Take lots of photos so that your children will never be able to forget how awesome you are!

Elevators ARE cool! Ooh, maybe you could make or buy him a pulley and show him how to raise and lower stuff...

Wow! I think your son's love of elevators is cool!! I'd love to have you and your family as guests at the hotel I work at, I bet it would be an interesting visit! Maybe when he grows up he can work for OTIS. You never know!! God bless your day.

Thats cool that you go above and beyond for your child. Great imagination by the way. Jared has a leapfrog that has a learning game the letter factory well they put letters on doors and you have to open the door to see whats inside. Well ever since he got that learning game he opens and closes doors all the time and he doesnt do it nicely neither he does it with a yell then a slam it drives me nuts but I cant help but laugh. They are so special.
