cjkellie's Bio

Hello everyone!!!

Thanks for having me. My name is Kellie and I am 47 years old. I live in Canton GA. I have 2 sons. Justin is my oldest and lives with his girlfriend. Chad is my youngest and is just about to turn 16. He is considered low functioning - but is the light in my life. He is for the most part non verbal but can say a few words with meaning. I am lucky to have some good services for him. Thanks again for welcoming us here.

I wanted to share a conversation my son who is non verbal had. This is a miracle. Something I have waited all of his life for. Chad is now 18 years old and has had all the therapy I could get for him. Chad has a diagnose of Autism, MR and Bipolar. Pica can occur. We have been blessed by kindness of others who have often offer their services at no cost or reduce cost. I have never given up on him and always believed he could learn to communicate if it was meaningful for him. I have worked with the best therapist for the past 8 years. We have as a team taught Chad the meaning of communication. He uses a voice out put device that has worked so well for him. Recently since Chad did turn 18 we had to go to the Social Security office for paperwork. Chad went in without any issues. This is our first success. Once we signed in and were waiting Chad began to count. Counting helps my son reduce stress. We counted a few times. Chad using his device requested fast food. I told him he would have to wait. He told me "No". About that time we were called to the window for our interview. We sat down and the lady began to ask questions. Chad using his device told her that "I get mad when I have to wait". She very calmly told him she was typing as fast as she could. He waited about 5 seconds and then told her that "sometimes I yell when I have to wait". She again in a calm voice told him she was trying to hurry. He waited a little bit longer, just seconds and then told her " I need to count while waiting". She started to count!!! The whole time telling him she was typing as fast as she could. He then requested fast food again. She stated telling him how to get there. Chad waited for a second or two longer and then said "waiting stinks man". She responded it sure does. And then we were done. I walked out feeling like I was 10 feet tall. My son who can't speak had a conversation with a total stranger. It was unprompted and he was completely independent. God answer this prayer in His time not mine. Thank you dear Lord for this gift.

And just think, he may have only been half serious, this might have actually been some dry-humor on his part.
