Hi, My name is Debbie and I am the mother of a 9 year old high functioning autistic boy named Cade.  He is a very sweet and sometimes affectionate child.  He loves spongebob, legos and lately The Simpsons.  My hope for him is that in his life he will have true friends that accept his uniqueness.  I am still waiting and hoping for that to happen.

My son, Cade, has progressed so much over the last 5 years since his diagnosis. But there are days that make it difficult for me to remember all of his progress. Today was one of those days. We were invited to a birthday party for a 11 year old child of one of my friends. The 11 year old invited everyone in her class. Her class happens to be made up of children that my son was in kindergarten with 5 years ago. These kids seemed light years ahead of Cade. They interacted so effortlessly. I was the only parent that stayed at the party so I was able to observe the difference. The kid's played chase with water balloons, baseball and basketball. Cade did try to throw water balloons at other kids but then he cried when someone threw a balloon at him. I had to intercede and calm him down. Cade kept asking me over and over if he was 'doing good' so he could go inside and watch t.v.. I just kept telling him to play with the kids and then he could get his 'screen time'. He would attempt to play and then for various different reasons tears would come and I had to calm him down. By the end of the day I was in tears. As he has gotten older the chasm between the 'typical' kids and him has really grown. I know that overall he is doing wonderful. Sometimes, however, wonderful just doesn't seem good enough
