Hi-
My name is Donna Jo a/k/a Deej.  I am a vocational evaluator in Metro Atlanta area, although I test consumers/clients in all parts of Georgia.  I love to listen to Christian music, read lots of books, and try to keep up with various crafts.  I've been involved with the Deaf Community since 1990 and love to use American Sign Language to convey Christian music to my Deaf friends.

Chores: How are your children involved?

KK has been doing pretty well at making his bed and cleaning up his room. Of course, most neuro-typical kids by 13 (almost 14) should be able to make their own bed (doesn't mean they always do). However, this is one area where KK's autism is a blessing. He obsesses over the fact that his bed has to be made to HIS standard of perfection (which varies from morning to morning).

Over the past two or three months, he's started feeding our Bichons their evening meal while I'm clearing off the table, etc. He really enjoys helping whenever possible.

He is supposed to help fold his clothes and hang up his clothes that go into his closet after I've done the laundry. That comes with the "normal" grumbling that pre-teen/ teenagers typically give parents when asked to do something they think isn't their job. I've taken some of the sting out of it by saying it's part of his school work for life skills ... helping him to be able to work toward eventually having his own apartment.

I like that, too. My son wants to 'move away' someday, so it just might connect.

That is a great idea---giving the chores a purpose for the future....
