Hi-
My name is Donna Jo a/k/a Deej. I am a vocational evaluator in Metro Atlanta area, although I test consumers/clients in all parts of Georgia. I love to listen to Christian music, read lots of books, and try to keep up with various crafts. I've been involved with the Deaf Community since 1990 and love to use American Sign Language to convey Christian music to my Deaf friends.

Well, Sunday was a rough day for our home, in fact this whole month has been very rough. KK, at 13 ... almost 14, is having issues with autism, ADHD, becoming a teenager, and who knows what else!!!!
Well, Sunday seemed like any other Sunday ... a little bit of stubbornness that I've come to expect regardless of what we're doing. However, I did not expect as we started out walking to my office as a family, that KK would decide that he wasn't going to the office with us. He was walking ahead of us but still within sight. That is until we got to the place where he would walk up a little hill and walk in front of my office building. My hubby and I were about a hundred feet behind him at that point so it took us a little while to catch up to make the turn. But, no KK! There are lots of bushes around my office, so thought he was just playing. However, after looking all around, it didn't take long to realize he was no place close!
My heart sank as I realized that even though it had been about a year since the last time he'd run away, that the issue was not gone. My hubby walked back to the apt. to get my car because experience has taught us that he can move very quickly when he makes his mind up to get "away." After 30 minutes of driving the close roads (within a 2-mile radius of the office/apt.) I finally gave up and called the police. About that time, hubby went back to the apt. because I'd forgotten to bring my cell phone. He got there and called me on the office phone. He thought KK was somewhere in the apt, but hadn't located him at that point. Later he told me that what cued him in was that the dead bolt was locked but the regular lock wasn't. We had left the regular lock, locked, but the dead bolt unlocked.
Just after the police arrived, hubby confirmed that KK was indeed at the apt. We all went to the apt. KK was very upset and angry. Not sure what started it all off, but it took a long time after the police left (being assured that KK was ok and not in any danger) before I could calm him down. Never did find out what had set him off.
The week so far has been about the same as it has been all of January ... lots of resistance to doing school work, lots of resistance to doing anything he doesn't personally want to do, and the stubbornness to just sit for hours and do nothing if he doesn't want to do what he's being asked to do.
Is it ever going to get better?

I can't answer that question... In fact, I have friends with NT kids KK's age and they are asking the same question. You certainly are not alone. Hang in there.
