Hi my name is Sonya. I have a wonderful husband who works his butt off so I can stay home with the kids Bryan 15, nt and Seoc 4, special needs. Seoc (pronounced Shock, it is Gaelic for Jack, it means God is Gracious) has numerous diagnosis but Autism is the one we struggle with daily. He has the biggest smile and best laugh I have ever heard. He is high functioning and has hyperlexia. He keeps life very interesting to say the least.

Being this is our first year dealing with the school system I am still in the dark. I thought the purpose of an extended school year was to prevent regression? I just found out from another parent that they do not provide therapies during the ESY program. So what are we suppose to do for therapy, if your ins. won't pay because they think it is the schools responsibility if it is included in your childs IEP.
Then I found out that the elementary school right next to us has a preschool program. I was lead to believe that the school my child is attending was the only school he could attend. Since I didn't know about the other one we missed registration and it is full. I really want him to go to Kindergarden there and thought the transition would be much easier if he attended preschool there as well.
I am also pushing for inclusion because he really needs it but am afraid of how he will do and does he need an aide and how to get one. It is all so very overwhelming and it does not help when parents are left in the dark about their options.
Any advice appreciated, Thanks for listening to me vent.

My insurance private(primary) and medi-cal (secondary) have covered speech and OT for my son. It has been hours in addition to district provided therapy. I suspect a lot has to do with diagnostic coding. None of my son's labs or therapies has ever been coded as autism or anything close to it. School therapy is only to correct educationally related issues not medical issues.

My two kids are going to be in the Summer program for our district preschool. They will still get their therapy but it is pared down. If they aren't getting anything individual I would ask how they are incorporating these things in the regular class. I think as someone posted before, you need to demand answers to specific questions. Bring up the school you found and ask why that was not presented as an option. Ask if there are others you were not told about. I think we need to press for specific answers or we may not get info that we really need. Kristin

I must be pretty lucky my son went into K and thats how we found out he has ASD. Our school is great they got him right into all the special classes like ot and speech and he is in special ed for his classes and does spend time with his regular class. I am so proud of the teacher he has for special ed. She loves her kids and she doesnt care what they have as long as she can get them the help they need to go forward. She's a great teacher!!!!!

I have found from my own experience is that often they will not disclose all info. Basically, you have to pull it out of them & challenge. Sucks but that is my experience

Best thing to do is ask to see all the language based classes first...By his test scores you will know if he is able to keep up with a kindergarden class...You will have to fight really hard to get an aide to help in a regular ed class...but it is possible...Now you can get a copy of the schools policy that states they do not provide therapy during the summer and present this to your insurance with a Rx from your ped. for continued therapy...all you can do is try...check with the pre-school once again...when I worked for the state pre-school and for headstart, we always had to leave a few vacant spots for kids with IEP's who wanted to be in our program...no one tells you guys this stuff...just check...because they do get extra money for a child with an IEP...Julian went to headstart preschool 1/2 day and the other 1/2 he went to the special day class...I didn' have problems until first grade...please try your hardest to keep him out of a severly delayed special day class...if you wnat to talk more e-mail me...I can go on and on.
