janneane7's Bio

Hi everyone

My name is Jan and I am Mom to my wonderful son, 22 year old Andrew who has regressive autism that is fairly classic in it's presentation, (the result of his MMR vaccine at 16 months.) He also has bipolar disorder and tourettes syndrome.

I also have a wonderful (NT) daughter Allie who is 25 and working on hers Masters Degree in Fine Arts.

I work for an Autism agency and spend the rest of my time advocating for my son. I am trying to get the people in power in the adult service world to understand what "Best Practices" are for people with Autism.

I have been married for 26 years to my DH who is a sweetie and very content to let me do the "autism stuff."

Andrew has just transitioned from school to adult services, a very disheartening event! Adult Services knowledge about people with Autism and their needs is generally where the school system's knowledge was back in 1993!!

I am really hoping to be able to corespond with other parents of young adults with Autism who are also strong advocates for their sons and daughters. This is a tough enough road to travel, without having to do it without being able to share ideas with others who are also facing the similar issues.

Medicaid makes me MAD
by janneane7 on 09.09.08 - public - 88 visits

Andy, because he is over 18 has Medicaid in addition to my husbands health insurance. Well he is on a bunch of different medications to help treat his bipolar disorder. These meds keep his mood stable and enable him to have a much more normal life (well as normal as you can get with Autism & Bipolar & Tourettes)
Anyway, recently his risperdal went generic. I was fine with that until 3 weeks in and we discovered that Andy was suddenly off the wall at night. He was miserable, more obsessive, and just plain really cranky. So I called the doctor and although he said he hadn't had anyone have any problems with the generic we decided that putting Andy back on the name brand risperdal was a good idea, with the plan to talk in two weeks.
Well two weeks later Andy was much better and back to his old self. In the mean time though his depakote (used as a mood stabilizer and not for seizures) also went generic!!! The psych nurse who works for the doctor told me that they has contacted Medicaid and filled out the paper work to have both the risperdal and depakote stay brand name, and BECAUSE of the problems it was important NOT to change the depakote to the generic.
Well I go to the pharmacy today and the very sweet guy who works there told me that he had received paperwork from Medicaid that we had been denied ON BOTH!!!!!!
I was so ticked off!!!!!
I don’t mind generic medications. I’ll jump at the chance to lower my bill but when it affects my son’s mental health which the pshyc nurse documented, well it just burns me up to no end!
I will now have to pay $30.00 for each medication per month instead of paying $3.00 with Andy’s Medicaid.
I know some people try to rip off the system but it is awfully sad when someone who is just trying to make sure her son stay stable enough to be happy and actually have some semblance of a normal life gets slapped down like this.
I have already called both the Dr and the nurse to tell them that I want to appeal.
We will see what happens!

Appeal it....which also stinks...because you shouldnt have to do that. I just get so tired of all the red tape we have to deal with sometimes! I hope you get this worked out and they will change their minds!!! Have your doctor write them too.

I agree with Shannon - 80% of the people give up after the first NO and the insurance co's count on that...keep appealing. Not fair, I know. Meanwhile, every additional ingrediant, coloring, etc. makes a med act differently for each person. good luck...

That is too bad..I do think you should appeal. Sometimes I think Medicaid just denies everything the first time around. I used to do billing for a physician and most of my time was spent re-submitting medicaid claims.... One another note, Wynn's Risperdal was changed this month too. It didn't go generic, but was change to a tablet that dissolves in the mouth and doesn't have to be swallowed. Swallowing isn't a problem for Wynn so I don't know why the doc changed it. Anyway, on Friday, Wynn's behavior started going downhill. On Saturday, he was a violent mess. I have the claw marks all over my face as evidence. I sat outside his door while he was taking a little time out after attacking me and thought, jeez-this reminds of the days before Risperdal was on board. And then it hit me--we had introduced the new type of Risperdal just a few days before! As soon as he was back on the tablets, he settled right down--thank goodness. So I am with you--not all meds are the same. Fight, sister, for what you know Andy needs...
