I am thankful to all my FoggyRock friends who have helped me on the beginning of this journey with the autism spectrum. When I got here in June of '09, I was heavily researching Asperger's as possibly what was bothering my oldest son, Joshua. He will be four in Dec, and now we have a DAN dr who says PDD-NOS, but not an official diagnosis. So, now I continue and face the reality that my suspicions were right, make peace with it, and keep going.

Well, I tried to "create" this composition once already and it didn't work, so this probably won't be as good as the first.
I am very proud of my 3 yr old little man Joshua. He tried to go to our church's fireworks and was so brave! You see, he normally won't stay in the same room as a food processor, so listening to fireworks is HUGE!
We tried to prep him this afternoon by showing him some fireworks on YouTube. He loved them! Thought they were so fun. I noticed Greg had the volume set low, so I turned it up a bit to see what he would do, and I could tell it was too loud for him. I asked him if he wanted me to turn it down and he said Yes.
So, tonight during the patriotic service I was in class with him. I've seen so much improvement since reducing his gluten intake that I was beginning to wonder if I had made up symptoms in my mind. Well, during his class some of his social ineptness came out, reminding me that no, I didn't make it up.
After the service was a time of refreshments and visiting outdoors. He had so much fun sitting w/his cousin and friends on a blanket eating treats! He was acting like a normal kid. As the announcer stated only 5 minutes, he was getting very excited. Both Greg and I decided to try sitting on the blanket instead of the original from the car plan because he was having so much fun.
Well, he made it through two I think and then covered his ears and said he wanted to go to the car. Thankfully we had already packed up most of our stuff in case this happened. By the time we had it all ready to go he "wanted to go home". He whimpered a bit, but he never screamed or threw a fit!
I am SO PROUD of him! My husband is too. Over the weekend he thanked me various times for the effort of working toward a GFCF diet as he thinks I have given him back his son. He told me tonight 3 weeks ago Josh would not have had the self control he had tonight.
It broke my heart to hear him whimper, but he was so brave and I am so proud of him. We told him how brave he was and how good of him it was to tell us he was ready to go and do that anytime he felt that way.
He pointed out some sign letters on the way home and I asked him if letters make him feel better. "Yes," he said. So, there's still some stuff there, but hey! We're seeing progress!

You were so respectful to your son's needs by preparing him for the fireworks with the youtube video. What a great idea. And then, really listening to him when he said he was done, and not forcing him to sit through something that was painful--so respectful....and teaching him such trust.

Oh how this brings back memoirs! Please look into hearing retraining or AIT or The Listening Program. Might be a huge help. hyper sensitive hearing not only effects the outings like watching fire works, but unknown to so many of us, it effects everyday life in a negative way. KUDOS to hubby to seeing your hard work. Hang on to that guy...he is a gem!! :)
