lilbitofky's Bio

Hi Everyone!!!! My name is Stephanie my husband Gary and I have been married over 8 years happily married about half of that LoL (just jokeing! I love my husband and he loves me too).

I am the mother of a beautiful 7 year old boy whom has autism. He is the light of my life and has brought me more joy and tears than anyone or anything else I have ever known! Yeah, I know it sounds like every mother of a child with autism huh! LOL That is because our kids are the most special children in the world.

My boy is becoming more verbal all the time though he can not hold a conversation with me yet, that day is coming! I look forward to him being able to communicate with everyone around him and making lifelong friends. I love to watch him reach beyond what he was able to do last year and approach other children to play.

Like many or maybe even all of you my child is my hero. The struggles that he endures on a daily basis I can't even comprehend. The best thing is he does it all with that goregous smile on his sweet little face. I hurt when he hurts, I laugh when he laughs and I cry when he cries.(NOT IN FRONT OF HIM)  However as a mother I know it is my job to be strong for him and I will as long as I live. (Even though we all have weak moments!) Because we are human!

God Bless YOU and YOUR CHILDREN THE MOST! I WILL KEEP ALL OF YOU IN MY PRAYERS!

Need help finding good locks
by lilbitofky on 07.29.08 - public - 133 visits

Garrett being 8 and very mechanical inclined has figured out all the locks that we have bought and put on the the cabinets. Usually he figures them out in like a week if that. I am looking for good quality locks for our (side by side) door refrigerator and double door floor model cabinets any ideals???? Any help would be greatly appreciated. We are seriously thinking of going to key locks for the cabinets. Poor Garrett thinks he is hungry even when he has just finished eatting. I am afraid for his health and weight since Gary and I both have weight problems we know this is something we don't want Garrett to have to worry about. He has enough to deal with just with autism.

We use a combination lock to keep our fridge closed and that works great. We tried it on our cabinet doors and Wynn just pulled so hard that the doors came off of the hinges--so don't recommend that method. We actually had to move all the food that is tempting to Wynn to the basement and put a keyed lock on the door leading into that room. Not ideal, but at least I can know that Wynn is not raiding the kitchen. He would eat all day long--throw up, and then eat again! He even recently found a container of protein powder-choc. flavored and about killed himself trying to scarf it down before I found him. It was so dry that he choked on it and scared himself to death not being about to get a breath!...

That is a really good question! I'm glad you asked it! Anyone know any ideas for a lock for the dishwasher? That is Jamesons big hang up right now. He has figured out the regular lock..... I have not been able to find anything!

There are a set of cabinet locks that require the use of a magnet to open http://www.babysupermall.com/main/products/saf/saf71175.html We use these in our kitchen.

We had a similar problem with Daniel. We used a keyed bicycle lock on the bathroom medicine cabinet. That worked well.

Have you considered an alarm? I bought alarms for our doors that work on a magnetic break system. Michelle hates the sound and can tell if they are on or off by looking at the key slot. You can also get them with digital pads and use a code. They are carried by Radio Shack. I worry alot less about her wandering with them, they might at least know when he's up to mischief. Good luck.

Not sure if you have handles on your cabinets. But, you could use bicycle cables with combo locks. They are less than $4 a piece at wall mart & hardware stores. Could use cables & suitcase combo locks too.
