Hi, I am new to autism and am on a journey to help my son be the best version of himself.

My name is Melissa and I am 33 and married to a wonderful and supportive man named Kevin.  I have a step son  Taylor who is 8 and a little boy Will who is 22 months old and has Autism.    Will is in the inital stages with Babies Can't Wait.  He has started Speech therapy and will start Occupational therapy soon.  We have started with our DAN! Dr. Sloan and are starting GF/CF  and some supplements.

Right now Will has 1-2 words depending on the day.  He has some sensory issues (Tactile, Vestibular, proprioceptive, and taste).  He has temper tantrams, doesn't sleep, and loves to bang his head.  But he is the greatest little boy.  He is great at figuring out how to turn things on and off, getting into the smallest places, and making you laugh!  He has such a sweet heart!

I am trying to learn as much as possible to not lose precious time!

I try not to focus on the cause of his Autism but I like the saying.... Genetics don't cause Epidemics.

Help Throwing!
by minnakay on 05.30.08 - public - 107 visits

Not sure what to do with Will, he has decided to throw (hard) anything he can get his hands on. I don't want to make a big reaction because then he will keep doing it (learned that when he hit the dog) he isn't listening to 'no'. Any tips?

My son used to do this all the time. I would do as someone suggested and give him vertain toys that are okay to throw. (and give him a target to spare the dog!) And if he throws anything he shouldn't make sure HE picks it up and puts it where it belongs and take that toy or object away until the next day. This got my son over it really quick.

My youngest Kai goes through phases of throwing things, we just try to substitute with soft balls and things that don't wreck the house!!!!!! The net idea is a good one think I will try that too. Good luck.

I think it's just a face he is going through. For instance I compare Mickie to his big brother James who would through things when he was 1 year old. Mickie did it recently when he was 10, never did it when he was 1. Maybe Will is just going through the face now instead of when he was 1. For now just try to keep brake ables and hard items away from him, he is probably going to stop when you least expected. Just a suggestion.

we used different size laundry basskets and found use for all the Mc D's beanie babies. We even hung a hoola hoop from the ceiling fan for him to throw thru...on gross motor goal ACHIEVED.

When Wynn was around 2 years old, he started throwing things too. It seemed to bring him great pleasure...and what an accurate arm he had! We imagined the big leagues one day! Anyway, to accommodate him, I turned his sister's pack-and-play on it's side and gave him a mound of beanie babies and soft toys to throw into the netted area. He loved it and it gave him an appropriate way to use his new "talent"......And then one day, it passed and he hasn't been into throwing since.
