I'm a mumblethirtysomethingmumble mom of three. Our oldest girl, The Munchkin, 10, is gifted and homeschooled. Then we have the twins, age 2, Birdie and The Boy. The Boy has been all but officially diagnosed as autistic, and definitely has substantial sensory issues and is currently nonverbal. Birdie has some minor sensory issues, and never shuts up, although her speech development is just below standard deviation for her age.
The Boy has been "different" from day one, and the twins are not now and never have been vaccinated, which apparently makes us an oddity in this autism journey (early onset?!?! In this day and age?!?! What kind of freaks are we!?!?!). We are just beginning interventions, which include speech therapy (if we can ever get a therapist), Occupational Therapy with Sensory Integration, and an in-home special educator. We are using really a DIY eclectic approach, although the inclusion of some RDI intervention work does appeal strongly to us, and ABA definitely does not.

Our weekend started Thursday evening... sort of. Thursday, we had our first visit with the OT, and my mom kept the girls. Because Friday we were to see the neurologist, we decided she should keep Birdie, The Boy's 2 year old twin sister, for the night. What? So Thursday evening I picked up Munchkin (the 10 year old) and left my tiniest. I was strangely both elated and heartbroken.
The Boy had a decent night - only woke up once, and went right back to sleep - and we had no trouble in the morning. In fact, he was great all day. See, we have 1.5 hour drive to the neurologist's office. Then, we had to drive another 1.5 hours to drop Munchkin off at her godmother's for a weekend adventure that had been planned for some time. THEN we had to drive another 1.5 hours home, after being at the Godmother's house for several hours. The Boy had never been in a car longer than an hour, and that was usually because Birdie wouldn't sleep and I'd pile everyone in and go for a drive. Because of his issues, he generally stays close to home.
But he did amazing. He didn't even sleep in the car! He ate tater tots! He only tried to run into the road once at Aunt G's house! When we got home, he played quietly, seeming to enjoy his time without his twin (when we got back to town, she was already asleep, and it was storming, so she stayed another night).
On the flip side, Birdie went around asking for the others off and on all day. She had a good time, but, well, she missed us! As we did her. However, it was rather nice to know that there was the possibility of only one toddler waking in the middle of the night!
Other than those adventures (or maybe because of them) we had a very mellow, stay home kind of weekend. Birdie was happy to see everyone when she got home, and The Boy seems to be happy to have her back. He's squeaked at her, and even jumped with her on the bed in the playroom and let her wrestle him down while he was smiling and giggling.
He has really been very mellow, very happy. There have been only a couple of meltdowns, and they've all centered around "Give me a warm milk bottle now because I'm thirsty and tired and what else do you want from me!" I wish we could stop those meltdowns, or get him to learn his hunger/sleepy indicators before he gets into that mode, but I suppose that's the nature of that part of him, isn't it?
All in all, it's been a great weekend. I wish it was a longer one for us, but Hubbie is going to go in to work tomorrow anyway, to get things done while it's quiet. I hope to extend the mellowness of this weekend to the rest of the week.
